You Gotta Serve Somebody (kerry's National Service Plan 'draft')

You Gotta Serve Somebody

by Gene Healy

Gene Healy is senior editor at the Cato Institute.

Touting his national service plan before a group of college students recently, John Kerry intoned: "this election is not just about what we're going to do, it's about what you're going to do." That formulation's a little less eloquent and a little more threatening than Kerry's idol, the other JFK's "...ask what you can do for your country," but such are the times.

What can you do for your country, in Kerry's view? Join a dramatically expanded AmeriCorps. Kerry's "Compact with the Next Generation" seeks "the largest increase in domestic national service in our history," ballooning the program from 75,000 to half a million Americans in national service each year within a decade. Those who sign up for two years will get the equivalent of four years of tuition at a public university.

This is the watered-down late-campaign version.

The pre-campaign version was: community service or no
high school diploma, dude (and dudette). See:
http://www.mcgath.com/kerryslavery.html

And we may safely assume that what K&E really want is
represented by Rangel's HR163, an open-ended Universal
National Service. Two years (for starters) of slavery
and indoctrination for everyone. See:

Not just youth but Grannies too. His plan is worse than a military draft. It smacks of the Hitler Youth Programs..only sweetened with OUR TAX DOLLARS! It will require a 'backdoor' tax hike at the state level to build those additional college facilities and hire more profs to brainwash the skulls full of mush!

THE KERRY DRAFT PLAN

Kerry Calls for Record Expansion in National Service; Offers Affordable College for Young People Willing to Serve America

3. Every penny paid for, with money to spare. John Kerry's plan requires roughly $13 billion in new resources over 10 years and is paid for by his new initiative to eliminate the subsidized and guaranteed profits for banks making student loans. Today, bank profits are set in statutes written by lobbyists. John Kerry will require banks to bid in an open auction for the business of student loans. He will take billions that now pad banks' earnings, and instead direct those resources to young people who want to serve America and pay for college, with money left for other service and education initiatives.

The Raw Deal: John Kerry's Empty National Service Promises

Kerry Unveils National Service Plan Presidential candidate John Kerry says his $10-million Citizen Patriot Fund would give Americans new ways to volunteer and support social entrepreneurs, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Aug. 5.

Under the proposal, as many as 100 Americans would receive grants of up to $100,000 each to develop new service programs. Grants would be awarded to those who have served in the military, Peace Corps, or AmeriCorps, and would require a dollar-for-dollar match from corporate donors.

The National Peace Corps Association praised the plan, but the Heritage Foundation said the nation needs "more volunteerism, not more government programs."

Kerry also called for increasing tenfold participation in Corporation for National and Community Service programs that provide educational aid.

Kerry wants MANDATORY national service for college tuition!!! This is a FR thread.

Believe it, folks. Both Kerry and Edwards were advocating mandatory service for civilians, even back during the primaries. They've washed a lot of it off their websites, since then.

It's NOT all Volunteery. And you should care because it's coming OUT OF YOUR POCKET at both the state and federal levels. You must not have noted that he's going to pay for their college educations. Colleges are state funded for the building and profs. It will take a huge increase in those facilities across the US to take in the numbers he's envisioning. It won't be a over night thing as this is a 'GROWING' type program. It's pegged at $13BILLION at the federal level according to the one article.

Have you ever known a gov't program that didn't NEED more and more money thrown at it to 'fix' it?

Remember the line from the movie "Starship Troopers". "Service equals citizenship". Is this what weve come to?? God I hope not. Whats worse for me is this. If j effing k does get elected. He will be inaugurated on my birthday. January 20th. I'll never be able to celebrate it again.

> As long as its all voluntary, I don't really care.

It won't be voluntary for long, if ever. Entirely apart
from the matter of "what's a Kerry promise worth" ...

Kerry's military will suffer from plunging enlistments
and re-enlistments. He will have to have a draft, and
all the draft bills are actually UNS bills.

You might be able to chose between cleaning toilets in
a slum or putting on a uniform, but the odds are that
he won't even get enough people opting for those pretty
blue helmets, and before long, the military will be
conscripting.

Reverse projection hoax.
What Kerry says Bush plans is not only not true,
it's exactly what Kerry will deliver.

Ah there it is legal serfdom yes sire we shall serve thee.... I thought we did away with this in the 14th century.. Well then maybe our youth will sign on and decide later to run away to another country and start a revolution against the US... History sure is funny that way...

Kerry hey Kerry get a clue...and believe me the first thing that will go under a Kerry administration is the second ammendment... he can't afford to have armed americans with what he plans to do.

That is exactly why Rangel voted againts HIS OWN bill, the "forced servitude" issue wasn`t included or given any time on the floor for debate.

I seem to remember something about them not being able to find anything for the 75,000 AmeriCorps people to do, so how are they going to be able to find anything for half a million of them to do?
