HOUSTON, Pa. - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) would appoint Supreme Court justices who would safeguard a half-century of civil rights gains, his wife said Friday.
"Fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, we are reminded now more than ever that we need a Supreme Court to protect our hard-won victories," Teresa Heinz Kerry told the Pennsylvania State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites).
"John Kerry will appoint judges that interpret our Constitution and don't go there for political reasons to divide our country," she added during a 20-minute prepared speech.
The NAACP had invited Bush to speak at the conference as well, but he declined and did not send a surrogate, while Kerry sent his wife, said Burrell Brown, president of the state conference.
Responding to Heinz Kerry's comments, Republican National Committee (news - web sites) spokeswoman Heather Layman said President Bush (news - web sites) has vowed to appoint judges who would closely follow the Constitution, rather than "legislate from the bench."
Heinz Kerry focused on civil rights, education and disenfranchisement of black voters in the 2000 election during a speech aimed at strengthening her husband's prospects for winning Pennsylvania's 21 electoral votes in a neck-and-neck national race against President Bush.
The stakes are particularly high in Pennsylvania, which her first husband, Republican Sen. John Heinz III, represented until his death in 1991. Bush carried the state in 2000, but recent polls give Kerry a slight lead this year.

The plan..
"I'm so drunk...I can't feel my feet! Hee-hee-hee!"
This woman must think Black people are STU PED!
"Interpret"?
Hell, anybody can "interpret" the Constitution, what we need are judges who "follow" it, and not make it up as they go along.
Someone should get Heinz another drink.
No thanks you guys can keep Philly. We've got Trenton, Camden, Newark, Jersey City, and Princeton. Be thankful that you have a large area of conservatives between Philly and Pittsburgh to prevent liberal inter-breeding.
I noticed on all the pics that the Ketchup Queen is wearing the Lance Armstrong yellow wristband. Apparently each of them spent the dollar so stupid folks think they care. I'd like to see exactly how much they have given to the cause beyond the $1 donation for the band.
Can't talk you into it? just think about those electoral votes going to conservatives for a change?
