George W. Bush for president [Denver Post Endorses President Bush]

The Denver Post editorial

George W. Bush for president

Sunday, October 24, 2004 -

The presidential race has become a teeth-gnashing affair for many Americans, no matter if they have a strong preference and pray that it will be realized, or if they resemble the Colorado voter who blanched the other day when we expressed surprise that after all the tumult, he remains undecided.

It isn't so much that I'm undecided, he said. I'm conflicted.

Well, of course.

Typically, in the case of an incumbent, our endorsement calculation would begin this way: Are we, as Coloradans, better off today than we were four years ago?

In a word, no. Since 2001, Colorado has lost more jobs than we've gained, and the ones we've gained pay less than the ones we've lost. We pay less in taxes, but our household and medical expenses have skyrocketed. Ninety thousand of us have lost our health coverage. Washington is ringing up record deficits and sticking the next generation with the bill. In Iraq, Colorado-based military units and reserves are deployed in a hostile environment for questionable purpose and uncertain result.

Yet, in the context of Nov. 2, it isn't sensible to assess the state of our union in easily definable ways. Ours is an era in which security matters most, and national security is the preeminent duty of the next president.

Coming from the Denver Post, this is BIG. Guess they put the United States ahead of democratic loyalty!

Usually the Rocky Mountain News is right and the Denver Post is left. Guess the Post editors have some core values!

But Kerry is a lot further left than he presented himself at the debates. We are in WWIV. We need a leader who can persist even when we are having bad days. Kerry isn't that man.

Even though it's a 'qualified' endorsement, I'm surprised. I 'grew up' (as much as I am probably going to anyway) in Colorado, and, as I recall the DP was the more liberal paper and the RMN was the moce center to slightly right (you've indicated it still is that way). I'm pleased w this!

According to the San Jose Mercury News website, the following endorsements were issued on October 24:

Kerry: Washington Post, Des Monies Register, Chicago Sun-Times (the Sun-Times endorsed Bush in 2000).

Bush: Columbus Dispatch, Austin (TX) American-Statesman, Houston Chronicle, Easton (PA) Express-Times.

None: Detroit News opted not to endorse a candidate (they endorsed Bush in 2000).

I think they are both left. This has been quite a surprise.

But on polarization, anyone who hasn't noticed that our country is polarized is avoiding what has been obvious for a long time. My family and I have sat and stared while being yelled at by socialists in more than one county meeting.

I moved to Boise from Denver about three months ago. The Post and the RMN actually merged operations over a year ago (heck, it's probably been two), although they ostensibly maintain separate editorial boards. I'm surprised to see the Post endorse Bush.

However, after reading their editorial, and looking at the sidebar with all of their picks, I'm left wondering why this representative of the "press" should be afforded special protections that other corporations are not, under the campaign finance reform laws.

Apparently, the press may editorialize, but Sinclair may not show a documentary that, IMHO, is eminently central to the discussion of Senator Kerry's campaign thesis: he's a battle-hardened veteran who can be trusted when it really counts.

I downloaded Stolen Honor today, thanks to a FReeper's link (thanks, Catie); I look forward to viewing it tonight in my comfy chair, while sipping my Jim Beam.

Maybe the Denver Post editors figure LiveShot Kerry has some explaining to do about his discharge from the navy...and that a record of lies and avoidance of responsibility isn't reassuring in wartime.

Speak of damning with faint praise...

Yeah, seems like the 'lesser of two evils'...

But hey, it's a good thing...

Especially since they support almost 64% dims...

Can anyone tell me quick what the rules are on posting Gannett? Are they excerpt or just link?

Well, apparently, there is no posting of anything, links or what have you, from Gannett per the posting mechanism. But, let me just add to the list the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. This paper usually leans markedly left, and endorsed Gore in 2000, but has endorsed Bush in 2004. Circulation is in the 50 to 60K range. See link if interested in the content.
