Vice President Cheney's straight daughter criticized John Kerry yesterday for mentioning her gay sister in his debate with President Bush but sided with the Democrat in his opposition to the President's effort to ban gay marriage.
Elizabeth Cheney, an ex-Bush administration diplomat, was the latest Cheney to voice outrage at Kerry for bringing up her lesbian sister, Mary, during the third presidential debate Oct. 13.
"I think we've all been pretty clear that we thought it was out of bounds. Mary was angry herself about it," Cheney told CBS' "Face the Nation."
She said Kerry's citing Mary to answer whether he deemed homosexuality a lifestyle choice "was really exploitative" and an attempt "to try to score some political points."
But on the issue of whether there should be a constitutional amendment banning gay nuptials, Elizabeth Cheney took the same position as Kerry and her dad - that the ban is not necessary and an issue best left to individual state governments. "I agree with my father," said Cheney, who is married with children.
Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart said he accepted that the Cheneys were miffed and, when asked if the candidate feels bad, said, "Of course. It was not received as intended."
Marygate reared its head elsewhere yesterday when right-wing televangelist the Rev. Jerry Falwell said he disagreed with the veep's stand on the "perverted" gay lifestyle issue. Falwell said his vote Nov. 2 will be a vote for Bush - and not for his running mate. "No, I wouldn't be electing him [Cheney]. I'm electing George Bush," Falwell insisted on CNN's "Late Edition."
Memo to Jerry Falwell -- please watch your words carefully.
So if it was Cheney vs. Kerry, Falwell wouldn't vote for Cheney? Can somebody please tell nuts like Falwell and Pat Robertson to just shut up until the election is over?
You'd think Falwell would have learned to be more diplomatic in his choice of words by now.
He's got to be 65 years old by now.
This is not the first time Elizabeth has adressed Kerry's crass use of her sister.
