If they separated in 1982 it was likely just after the election for Governor/Lt. Governor in Massachusetts.
I know because I was conned into attending a rally for Kerry back then. I was told it was just a comedy show by my friend. So I went and saw all the usual suspects (Peter, Paul, and Mary, Chevy Chase, Robin Williams, and several other entertainers.)
Mrs. Kerry was right there on the stage playing the role of the dedicated wife. I am confident that event was held in October that year, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
