A senior Saudi diplomat has received a parcel disguised as a gift from a former Pakistani premier that contained four grenades and an anonymous letter warning him to leave Pakistan, the Saudi ambassador said on Monday. Abdullah Al-Omari, the deputy head of the Saudi mission, received the package on Thursday at his residence. Pakistani security forces were informed immediately and came to defuse the explosives, ambassador Ali Awadh Asseri said. Security for Saudi diplomats has since been increased.
Asseri said the packet was wrapped as a gift and was made to look like it had been sent by former Pakistani Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
No one has claimed responsibility for making the threat and Asseri said Pakistani authorities were investigating. Al-Omari will not leave Pakistan and no travel advisory has been issued for other Saudi diplomats working in Pakistan. "They have been asked to be careful," Asseri said.
"Such threats will only strengthen the friendship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. This (Pakistan) is home for every Saudi," Asseri told The Associated Press. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are allies of the United States in the war against terrorism. Both are fighting homegrown Islamic militants, who are accused of targeting Westerners on their territories.
