Need some Legal advise and help

Posted on 10/26/2004 8:57:32 AM PDT by alchemist54

The wife and I have been traveling around SW Ohio and just in the last week we have noticed a LOT of kerry/Edwards signs placed in road medians, right of ways and on vacent property inside most city limits. Is this legal? Isn't this like the city government endorsing candiates? How can this be stopped?

I know my town is loaded with signs for all parties. The local headquarters puts them out. It is illegal to steal or abuse any of the signs.

Each headquarters has 24 or so many hours after the election to remove the signs. This is legal. As long as they do not hinder a thru-way, each headquaters can put them up all along the roads, etc.

My husband and I used to live in SW Ohio, the reason that they are being displayed on the vacant lots is because the Kerry supporters would get run out of town in a normal neighborhood. LOL. I don't know about the medians and such. But most properties are considered private, not public domain, so I would imagine that without the consent of those who own the property, it would be considered illegal. Look into it. I am in central Ohio now. Not many Kerry signs here thank goodness!

1. You could call the local authorities, but I'm sure they have bigger fish to fry, and it will be inauguration day by the time they get around to taking the signs down.

2. I wouldn't know why it would be ILLEGAL per se, unless the city has some ordinance against signs in the median... Without knowing the city or the laws of the city, answering it would be impossible to say.

3. I don't think there is anything ILLEGAL about a city council endorsing a candidate... I'd be VERY surprised if the Berkley and West Hollywood City Councils haven't Endorsed Kerry...

4. It's free speech, and one of the things that makes America BETTER than the rest of the world... I might not like the message, but I'll fight for their right to say it.
