The Clinton curse
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | Oct 25, 2004 | Editorial

OpinionJournal.com had a cute piece Thursday in its Best of the Web column about the Boston Red Sox going to the World Series.

First, it noted the Sox may have beaten the New York Yankees in seven games in the American League Championship Series, but the Yanks outscored them 45-41. So in the spirit of the 2000 presidential election, the Sox didn't win the popular vote and therefore don't have a mandate in the World Series. Time will tell if that's true.

More interestingly, the Yankees now have made the playoffs every year this century, but have yet to win a World Series. Their last title came in 2000 when they beat the New York Mets. Since then, they've lost twice in the World Series and once each in the Divisional and Championship series. How come? OpinionJournal.com says it's The Yankee Curse:

"What happened since the Yankees won their last World Series? New York elected Hillary Clinton, an Illinois native who had falsely declared herself a 'lifelong Yankees fan,' to the Senate. After this offense, it seems, even having the Republican Convention in New York was not enough to appease the baseball gods."

We're not much for curses, but this one has some legs because Sen. Clinton's true baseball allegiances belong to the star-crossed Chicago Cubs. The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908, suffered a legendary late-season collapse in 1969, frittered away an almost certain World Series berth in 1984 and were five outs away from the National League pennant in 2003 before collapsing after a fan kept an outfielder from catching a foul pop. And this year, the Cubs were favorites to make it to the World Series, but missed the playoffs because of an odd confluence of injuries, Hurricane Frances, bad hops, late-season dead bats and brain cramps -- the stuff of curses.

But it also can be said that Sen. Clinton is the curse of the Democratic Party. After all, HillaryCare inspired the Republican Revolution of 1994, which swept the GOP into control of Congress for the first time in 40 years, and Republicans have dominated the legislative branch ever since. Later, she was at the heart of the Monicagate scandal, which led to the Clinton fatigue that helped George W. Bush to win the White House in 2000.

If Sen. Clinton can have this sort of mystical influence on the Yankees, the Cubs and the federal government, imagine the pox she'd bring on this country if she was ever elected president.
