I remember my grandmother (who was a saintly woman in every other way) actually say: "I'm a Catholic first, a Democrat second and an American third."
Although my family has managed to purge that sort of thinking, for the most part, many that I still know harbor identical loyalties. It's no fun having a clear, logical mind in this county!!!
