'Nonpartisan' NAACP taxes IRS' patience
Baltimore Sun ^ | October 30, 2004 | Gregory Kane

MAYBE SOME enterprising soul with an appreciation of irony should post a sign outside the NAACP national headquarters on Mount Hope Drive: "Chickens come home to roost here."

And come home to roost they have. Start building the chicken coops.

In July, NAACP board Chairman Julian Bond -- whose mouth should have been retired when his old organization, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, drifted into irrelevance back in the late '60s -- served up one of his patented anti-President Bush, anti-Republican salvos. He reiterated his comparison of Republicans to the Taliban and, for good measure, hinted that Bush really wanted to repeal the 14th Amendment, which was passed mainly with the purpose of giving citizenship to newly freed slaves.

Yep. According to Bond, Bush was some tobacco-chewing, hang 'em high Bubba just a-hankering to lash us po' colored folks back onto the plantation. Now, four months later, he's crying foul because the Internal Revenue Service has called his organization on its "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" brand of nonpartisanship.

The IRS classifies the national branch of the NAACP as a 501(c)(3) organization whose contributions from donors are tax-deductible. This designation also restricts its lobbying activities and prevents it from endorsing candidates.

The IRS is investigating to determine whether Bond's Bush-bashing was legitimate criticism or crossed the line into a back-handed endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John F. Kerry.

While I agree 100% that their status to be revoked, I don't think it's a good time to do it: IRS does this less than a week before the election. This can be used by Dems to argue that Bush Administration is trying to attack blacks...

That could be an argument but as you can see it's so obvious that LIBERALLY partisan blacks can't defend it.

of course this is a dirty little road to go down. IRS now considers prayer for a candidate illegal. Do we really want the IRS to have power over what people can and can not say.

That is exactly what they said.

They chase down conservatives and litigate on the strength of a newspaper article.

This cuts both ways.

Of course they're going to say that.

They think all they have to do is say "racist!" and they can skate.

It's time to have everyone play by the rules.

When the rules apply to everyone, the sharks swim away.

Much as I dislike the NAACP and most of what they stand for, I do not believe the IRS should have the right to harass any person or group.

(But then you have to realize that I'm one of those kooks who has read history, and realizes that the IRS has no basis in law and that the constitutional amendment that gave birth to this bastard child was never actually ratified by the states. I'm also looney enough to believe that "progressive" income taxes are just a tool for leftist social engineering.)

Reform the whole "non-profit" scam system. We donot need any stinkin' non profits. Pay your friggin dues and taxes like everyone else. If you can't justfy yourself by doing that much then go away.

Now how about all those Black Churches that think they don't have to follow IRS rules as well!

How many Black Churches has Kerry campaigned in? ..not just attending service, but campaigning from the pulpit!

You misunderstand the purpose of the IRS and by extension of government in general.

It is precisely the function of the IRS to enforce the various laws and regulations to protect the public from those who choose to not follow the rules.

Declaring oneself a kook is also not a defense, but rather an excuse..
