In tomorrow's [Sunday, October 31] edition, the St. Paul Pioneer Press endorses President George W. Bush. Here are some excerpts from that endorsement:
"But when they are held up side by side, it is clear to us that Bush has the sharper vision for a prosperous and safe 21st century."
"We believe he will lead the country with decisiveness that Kerry cannot muster."
"The president has led post 9/11 America with strength and resolve. His steadiness and calming presence on that September day three years ago and in the weeks that followed helped the nation cope with the unthinkable."
"Kerry said in the recent debates that he would 'get the job done' and bring our troops home. But saying it cannot make it so, no matter how often you repeat that promise. Kerry has not provided sufficient detail about how he might wage the war differently"
"Kerry would also repeal the Bush capital gains and dividend tax cuts. But Kerry's proposals are a prescription for an economic disaster, a sharp yank on the brake for an economy that is just starting to roll again."
"Four years of strategically targeted tax cuts have sparked a recovery, granted one marked by frustrating fits and starts."
"Kerry, taking a page from the Bobby McFerrin songbook, tells us in regards to Social Security: 'Don't worry. Be happy.'"
"But we believe that the battle must be taken to the terrorists who attacked us, rather than being fought on the streets of our American cities. President Bush understands that, has built his foreign policy around it, in fact."

I sure don't have to guess who the Red Star Tribune endorsed.
Would have been nice if the right leaning Billings (MT) Gazette would have endorsed Bush instead of the dud John Kerry.

The Catholic factor is a major issue in the election next Tuesday. Polls show a narrowly divided electorate—so narrowly divided, in fact, that a relatively slight swaying of Catholic voters can determine who will be the next President.
The Catholic factor has several elements. First, there is the fact that John Kerry is a Catholic who makes a point of his being a Catholic. What impact will his self-identification have on the Catholic voter?
Second, there is the issue of Mr. Kerry’s stances on a number of key issues on which there is no room for disagreement among faithful Catholics: illicitness of legal abortion, embryonic-stem cell research, and the cloning of embryonic human beings.
Mr. Kerry (a) claims to accept Catholic teaching on abortion but (b) purports to be unable to work to restrict abortion on the grounds that he can’t impose “an article of faith” on non-Catholics. Yet Catholic teaching on abortion is neither uniquely Catholic, nor something the Church presents as capable of being affirmed only by faith. Furthermore, Catholic teaching states that lawmakers can’t legitimately support laws recognizing the legal right to abortion, a position Mr. Kerry rejects.
The issue of John Kerry’s Catholicism also has generated heated debate about whether pro-abortion rights politicians such as Senator Kerry should be denied Holy Communion, whether they should be excommunicated, and, most recently, whether they in fact already are automatically excommunicated because of their support for abortion rights. How Mr. Kerry’s problematic relationship with things Catholic will influence Catholic voters remains to be seen. Will Mr. Kerry’s opposition to central Catholic teaching cause a decisive number of Catholic voters to go to Mr. Bush?
Third, there is the confusion among voters who identify themselves as Catholics about which principles should govern how they think about issues and candidates. Should some issues be regarded as more important than others for the Catholic voter? If so, as common sense seems to demand, which issues are more important? How is a Catholic to decide?

Catholic Answers isn’t backing off or backing down, even though “Catholics for a Free Choice” has tried to enlist the IRS to go after Catholic Answers’ tax-exempt status.

Nor did the Strib's endorsement of Kerry make a dent on us west-of-the-river conservatives, many of whom eschew it for the SPPP. I think the SPPP's endorsement will have more effect among suburban and outstate readers. For me, the most salutary effect is demonstrating that there isn't a monolithic liberal hegemony in the Metro-area dailies.
Most people don't realize reagan only lost minnesota by about 4,000 votes - and 14,000 people voted for a 3rd party candidate there.
Reagan would have had an electoral sweep that night (except for DC, which doesn't count)
It's all about Turnout people. The Dims are telling their people that "Well yes it looks close but we have a better turnout game".
If we coast we are toast. GET every Bush voter to the polls! We CAN win Minnesota!
There is a difference in the Metro dailies.
A minor difference, still you take what you can get.
If the President sweeps all three it's over....turn out the lights.
I read the St. Paul Pioneer Press's full-page endorsement of President George W. Bush. It was a well-thought-out, well-written piece that touched on many issues. The Pioneer Press editorial staff's endorsement should serve the President well and help make Minnesota a state that Bush will win on Tuesday.
The Pioeer Press has Joe Soucheray as a columnist who has the Garage Logic show on KSTP AM. A fairly good political slant.
A Pioneer Press daily costs a quarter; the Star Tribune's daily is fifty cents.
Good for them!
