Warren McGraw Unhinged (WV Democratic Supreme Court Justice Goes Insane - Must Hear Audio!)

Warren McGraw Unhinged

By:  Hoppy Kercheval

MetroNews Talkline, Sept. 15, 2004

During the race for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina in 1990, Democrat Harvey Gant was answering a TV reporter’s question about his stand on abortion. Gant was giving the standard pro-choice points when he casually added, “I believe in abortion for sex selection or whatever.”

His opponent, Republican Jesse Helms, ran Gant’s flippant and callous remark on campaign ads. Helms turned Gant’s own words against him and won the race.

Earlier this year Howard Dean’s already fading quest for the Democratic nomination for president was finished off by “the scream.” The media played over and over Dean’s maniacal sounding scream made during a campaign appearance. He wasn’t taken seriously after that.

Last week, Supreme Court Justice Warren McGraw gave a campaign speech at the annual Labor Day picnic in Boone County that has given his opponents ammunition. Gant and Dean gave their opponents short sound bites; McGraw gave his opponents a whole speech. McGraw sounded as though he was coming unhinged as he ranted about his opponents following him around to take pictures of him to make him look ugly. He charged, erroneously, the “U.S. Supreme Court had approved gay marriage.”

A political consultant I talked with, known to be supportive of McGraw, told me the tirade by McGraw was “deeply disturbing.” The consultant said the speech was “way over the top.”

In fact, it was. I’ve listened to it, or portions of it, several times. Most of the speech is now posted on the Republican Party’s website. Listen to it yourself and decide. McGraw’s rants sound deranged, not passionate. His normally populist tone has been replaced by an angry tirade.

The Republican Party has seized on the speech and is now using portions of it in a radio commercial. Yesterday when I talked about the speech on "Talkline" and played the GOP commercial, the phone lines were jammed with callers, mostly agreeing McGraw sounded on the verge of losing his mind.

Warren McGraw is a formidable campaigner, but he can often sound clannish and paranoid. Perhaps some of his paranoia is justified since his opponents may well have been following him around, just hoping for a slip-up.

It sounds like McGraw has given them a giant one.

I was forwarded this by a friend. You have got to hear this nutcase's meltdown. Thank God someone was rolling tape.

All of the following are MP3 files.

WV GOP radio ad.

Click here for Supreme Court Justice Warren McGraw's entire speech in Racine , WV (4 MB file)

Brent Benjamin radio ad (Republican running for McGraw's seat) <-- best of the three, just 1 minute long

YOU MUST HEAR THIS.

He makes Howard Dean and Al Gore sound like rank amateurs when it comes to angry lunacy. McGraw comes off like a televangelist in the throws of a full-blown attack of paranoid scizophrenia.

So listen and laugh!

I've been listening to the commercials on WWVA that the Republicans are running. He truly sounds deranged. The worst part is I recognize his name and am fairly certain that I have probably voted for him in the past when I lived in WV!

As I recall, West Virginia removed a judge a couple of years ago. He attacked a defendant in the court room and bit his nose.

Granted he sounds like he has a major screw loose, but at the same time, if you listen to his rant, he doesn't sound that much different from "Sheets" Byrd when he's having a bad day or his fellow Dems in the senate wind him up and send him out to read some prepared hate-filled whacko speech because they wouldn't dare but he can because he has an absolutely safe seat. Keep in mind that people like McGraw and Byrd get elected in WV because they are the ONLY ones running for the office. The Republican party is next to non-existant.

Thanks for those MP3s. That's just utterly amazing to think that that guy has been a judge.

ROFL! He does sound like a paranoid schizophrenic. And the funniest part is the final voiceover, saying "let's bring balance to our Supreme Court", which of course brings to mind the thought that McGraw is "unbalanced".

I was driving thru downtown Beckley (now there's an oxymoron) and saw a large billboard that said something along the lines of "Tired of having to go out of state to visit your relatives? Vote Republican."

A crappy economy is the legacy of years of nearly unopposed RAT rule in WV.

Amen to that, and I suspect that proud legacy will continue unabated when the halfwit Joe Manchin is elected governor (heaven help us). By the way, here's a previous thread on McGraw's Labor Day meltdown. I love those radio commercials where the tape is played of that jerk McGraw complaining that he's being followed by people taking pictures of "ugly." Good grief, crazy and sleazy!
