Daughters band together

Plantation, Florida: The Democrats unleashed their girl power in Florida on Saturday, deploying daughters of the presidential contender John Kerry and those of the former presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton.

Also in the charm brigade were the daughters of Senator Kerry's running mate, Senator John Edwards, and of the former vice-president Al Gore, the beaten Democratic candidate in 2000.

"We're all going to take back our future," Vanessa Kerry said at a rally in Plantation, north of Miami, one of several the girls deployed in the pivotal state.

"He needs your help," she said in reference to her father.

"This is the election of our lifetime," said Caroline Kennedy, comparing the presidential race to the close 1960 election that brought her father to power.

The crowd responded by chanting "JFK" - the initials of her father and of John Forbes Kerry.

Chelsea Clinton received thunderous applause when she spoke of her father's eight years in office.

References to Mr Bush were greeted with chants of "liar, liar", and references to the chaotic and controversial 2000 election elicited boos from the crowd.

"We know we really won," said Karenna Gore, echoing the belief of many Democrats that Mr Bush stole the election when the US Supreme Court halted five weeks of recounts, leaving him with a 537-vote lead in Florida that gave him the presidency.

The Bush campaign team has agreed to stop playing the 1976 hit Still The One by the band Orleans after the song's writer, John Hall, protested over its use and backed Mr Kerry.

"The Democrats unleashed their girl power in Florida on Saturday"

It will take a whole lot more "girls" than that to match the Bush twins.

"We know we really won," said Karenna Gore"

I know I'm really the child of a wealthy royal family and I was kidnapped by gypsies and left stranded in Appalachia.

Nobody believes me either.
