Arriving home from the hospital after being treated for a heart attack, 84-year-old Carol Barnes inched up the steps into her Sunset District home and headed straight for her absentee ballot.
"She said, 'That ... Bush, I can't allow him to be president again,' " said her son, Bo Barnes. " 'I want to vote for Kerry to make the world safe.' "
Too exhausted to do more than cast votes for president and two propositions, the widow of an Army major signed the ballot and told her son they'd complete the rest later. Three days later, on Oct. 17, Carol Barnes died.
Within an hour of his mother's death, Bo Barnes mailed her absentee ballot, fulfilling her dying request.
Such soul-deep loathing of George W. Bush is common in the Bay Area,

Talk about hallucinating. Someone give that chump a drug test.
makes it easy to just cut it out and let it go out to sea.
I am headed on a trip to SF November 10. Boy, do I want to head in there gloating . . .
What is the problem with San Francisco? Why are they so mentally disturbed in your neck of the woods?
SF is a major leftist bastion.
I wish I knew, friend. I have it a bit better down here on the Peninsula, but not much.
Get out!! We did, due to the computer industry collapse. My entire family is still there and I miss my parents horribly, but I LOVE Georgia!! : )
"Three days later, on Oct. 17, Carol Barnes died."
After years of heavy drug abuse.
Well, guess what. I had a class IV brain tumor removed in August, and I cast my absentee ballot for Bush.
Works both ways.
"Welcome to my world."
How can you stand it? I actually think of places like S.F. as foreign countries.
I live in the Seattle area. We truly have some crazies here, but San Francisco still claims the title of most psychotic city in America.
Man, the Dems will make up all kinds of great stories to justify casting ballots for dead people, won't they?
Then that loathing is actually for you and me - good average Americans. It's a loathing that would be more than mutual but for our Christian patience and restraint.
And personally, I am no longer a patient man with the likes of the Bay Area.... "Slow to anger" doesn't mean much when we are provoked for 30+ years.
She was not a citizen (ie. she was dead) on the date of the election, therefore her vote must be disregarded.
welcome to my world of living in the Bay Area. However interesting event yesterday. A nice looking man in a suit and cowboy hat came to my door yesterday he was Africian American (excuse my spelling) I normally dont answer the door but I thought it was the post man. He introduced himself and said he is working for the Republican Party???Stunned I opened my screen door and came out to the front he handed me a Republican Party door banner of dont forget to vote. The only word out of my mouth was your a Republican I am shocked. Not shocked because of why you might think I was shocked another Republican in my Liberal bay area. He told me I know there isn't many of us here. Than he started talking about his family in Ohio and trying to really talk to them about G.W.
So I felt a sense of hope. However the only reason why the dems win is because of the Liberal Bay Area if you ever look at a map of CA and the Red and Blue areas a large amount of Red shows up it is just in LA and The bay area we have a higher number of people
not fair but that is the way it works
Daed democrats voting early this election
It would seem to me that, at least by 'Rat standards, this is more than sufficient reason for Bush to send an army of lawyers into California and contest the election if need be. I'm not certain, but I thought a person needed to be ALIVE on election day in order to have their vote counted.
Isn't it amazing that a significant percentage of this country does not support our President. It must be the water.
I spent three years in San Francisco for grad school and was HORRIFIED at what I saw, lived near, experienced and had to endure. It is definitely NOT the place for a conservative christian Republican who loves her country and her Lord! (And the earthquakes were pretty awful, too!) I remember with loathing and sorrow the struggle of trying to get home at night after class on public transportation after the liberal loonies had -- once again-- staged a Gulf War protest and shut everything down. As I watched them tip over buses and set police cars on fire and break store windows, I knew that I would never consider staying and working in Sodom and Gomorrah.
Personally, I think that there is a negative (evil) spiritual influence over that region that has quite the stronghold. I am very, very glad to be living elsewhere in the State of California!
"She said, 'That ... Bush, I can't allow him to be president again,' "
What do the three dots stand for? I can imagine.
Nice mouth for an 84 year old. I guess the grandmas in the Bay area like to defy traditional mores also.
Mine too. And it gets worse, after this election, I get to have Carole Migden as my state senator, and Lynn (bag lady) Woolsey for a US Rep.
"Within an hour of his mother's death, Bo Barnes mailed her absentee ballot, fulfilling her dying request."
Isn't that technically voter fraud? Especially if he mailed the ballot after her death? I didn't think the "dead" could vote?
"Such soul-deep loathing of George W. Bush is common in the Bay Area"
Ha. Try ignorance. Kerry has been on the wrong side of history for 20 years now.
Luckily, she also signed her ballots for 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, and registered in Ohio.
They've bought into the anti-Bush rhetoric hook line and sinker and if you ask them why, they'll give all the nonsensical and shallow thinking of Moore, Springstein and Puffy.
In fact, it may be appropriate to launch some gigantic prank on them. They have no analytical ability and, if it's left-wing or anti-US, they'll buy it.
A non-profit to find a cure for male pattern baldness in minority dwarfs would do well but would do VERY well if condemned by Karl Rove or some other bogey man. Nice city, great restaurants, stupid, shallow people.
Make that "SFO," the airport designator for San Francisco (they HATE "Frisco").
Sympathy pains from Boston, your East Coast counterpart. Since I live in Boston and have spent a fair amount of time in SF, I have tried to analyze which place is actually further left. I think SF has more blatantly crazy people with no grasp of reality, although when it comes to voting, it's about the same. Boston has a larger union thug component than SF, although these thugs will sometimes show a support for the military that is missing in your city. In both cities, the Dems will take 90 percent of the vote.
I moved from that world 3 years ago to a very red state and love it. The people here are really different. I know more neighbors here in 3 years than I did 35 years in the Bay Area.
Come to Texas pal! Because quite frankly I can't wait for the big one to level that sesspool of perversion! The Gohmorrah of the Left coast!
Does the '60's, Haight and Ashbury, UC Berkeley and a liberal government for decades come to mind?
I'm in Oakland.
Are you close enough to SF to be able to contact the registrar of voters with the info in the article? It gives her name and pretty close to her address.
The conservatives in Boston have a better attitude though. In Boston, they have a wry humor about the mess that is local politics. In SF, they are just horrified and afraid.
My world also. Beautiful place but the politics make me crazy and feel quite isolated. Thus, FR.
Bo Barnes uses his dead mother for political gain. Michael S. Berg wanna be. Why are they always teachers?
Here is his Mom's obit. I think Bo's Dad would have kicked his ass for such behavior.
This guy probably just wanted to vote twice and used his dead mother to do it. Slimy crapweasel.
SF is a foreign country...just far enough away that I don't have to go there, just occasionally pass through!
Useful idiots abound in northern Cal. Kerry make the world safe? If such delusional beliefs weren't so dangerous, they'd be laughable.
Alas she died before the quake that will shake the bluest of the blue asunder piling stone on stone and rendering the void uninhabitable.
It used to be the Crown Jewel of California... Haight Ashbury and the flower children were the beginning of the fall from grace (IMO) and Willie Brown only hastened things.
The first of many dead votes for Kerry --- only this one they won't have to fork out any cigs, crack, booze or breakfast for.
Lived in East Bay for over 40 years, Hayward and Dublin. Only went to SF when I had too. Live in Texas now and love it. No matter where you live it is the people that make the area and the people here are great.
Back in the Reagan years the National Lampoon Magazine had a "World According to Reagan" map in it. It was color coded and the USA was huge compared to every other country. If you looked closely you could see that San Francisco was colored the same as the Warsaw Pact nations!
I wish I had a copy of that map now. There was more truth in it than they realized.
I'd be very afraid, Rev. God has got His finger on the Fault!
Well not in person, but I could by phone (of course, anyone could do that). But why---what would I ask?
My nephew just spent 8 years there and has now moved back to Va. Luckily he hasn't managed to get his car registered in 6 months so I know he hasn't registered to vote. When the election came up he started bashing Bush. I calmly (for me) asked him why he didn't like Bush. Response: "All the scandal" What scandal, I replied. "Bush made all that money off Halliburton and the war". Where do you get your news, I calmly replied. "NPR, my Irish friend says it had the only good representation of what's going on in Ireland." Me: So you're for Kerry because an Irishmen likes NPR? "yes"
And they say the aren't smart! I pray me kids have more of a clue.
Years ago I really loved the Bay area. Now I hate it.. its a vile area with downtown SF streets filled with low life and bums in every single doorway. Its the closest thing you can come to communism in this country.
I go to the area on a regular basis for business.. and stay in the south bay area.. or near the airport. I will not go downtown. I have personally been responsible for the cancellation or relocation of conventions that would put millions of dollars in the pockets of SF.
If the majority of shitbags in this city had there way, the working people in this country would pay 80% in taxes to support their 'socialist project'. SF.. SCREW YOU! I take great pleasure in the fact that your vote doesnt mean a damn thing.
If California would ever split their electoral vote, giving SF 20 EV and the rest of California 35, the Republicans would win those 35 this year.
