I am a research scientist in California working sometimes in the biology arena. I am voting against 71 as it is welfare for biologists and in a bankrupt state we can't afford to throw 6 billion dollars towards dubious research because it is politically correct.

Presently nobody is prevented from working on embryonic stem cells on their own dime. None of the results from embryonic stem cells shows promise, and if they did they would require a continuing dose of immune suppression drugs to keep the tissue from being rejected. Accordingly, nobody is willing to do the work without grant money. The possibility of a big score just isn't there.

The hot action is in adult stem cells from bone marrow and fat. The upside of this research is that the resulting tissue is your genetic material and won't be rejected. People are risking their own money to research this because there is the potential of a big payoff.

Executive summary: When the potholes are fixed then we can afford to burn cash on dubious research.

regards,
