Republican Wins Edwards' N.C. Senate Seat

RALEIGH, N.C. - Republican Rep. Richard Burr (news, bio, voting record), long an underdog in his race against Clinton aide Erskine Bowles, rode a late torrent of political commercials Tuesday to win the North Carolina Senate seat vacated by John Edwards (news - web sites).

The victory gave the Republicans a Senate sweep in the Carolinas. GOP Rep. Jim DeMint (news, bio, voting record) won in South Carolina on Tuesday to capture Democrat-held seat there.

Burr, 48-year-old five-term congressman, trailed Bowles by up to 10 points for several months, but the congressman made a comeback by repeatedly touting his role in negotiating a $10 billion payout from the federal government to tobacco growers. He also ran a flood of ads linking his opponent to former President Clinton (news - web sites), who is not well-liked in North Carolina.

Burr's conservative values have made him a key ally of the Bush administration, which encouraged him to run for Senate and rewarded him with visits by the president, his father, and Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites).

Meanwhile, Bowles had to distance himself from national Democrats in this right-leaning state. He shunned Kerry-Edwards rallies in his home state and did not attend the party's national convention in Boston.

Pinch me, I must be dreaming. Given that a Bush win is probable, John Edwards will no longer have a job?

Don't worry, he'll just go back to suing someone.

He'll probably rejoin his old law firm, make some money suing people, then run for Liddy Dole's seat in '08.

Dang, I didn't even remember Edwards had had the decency to get his butt off his Senate seat while campaigning for Veep. Put this one in the pickup column.

I hope that does not mean he is coming back to Raleigh or North Carolina...I hope we made it clear during this election...we do NOT want him.

Breck Boy unemployed?

He's now a part of that "two America's" thing. The employed and the unemployed.

A really great victory for Burr, and you can't say Bush pulled him along even though Bush won big in NC so did the the Dem Gov Easley. Burr was counted out by many even in late sept. For him to overcome Bowles name recgonition and money was very impressive. Congratulations to him on a great victory

Edwards was not seeking re-election in any case...he knew he would lose.

The best "news" is that Erskine Bowles -- or any democrat, but especially Erskine Bowles -- is NOT going into that Senate seat.

I always thought that that's why you guys elected him Senator - so that he'd shove off to Washington and leave you alone, except for a campaign every six years.
