Where were ya in '64, non-seq? Barry won six states that year - all in the old confederacy.
The northern (yankeeland) and western (the left coast) states are blue this year, non-seq. They were blue four years ago as well. They were also blue in 1964 when only the old CSA supported Goldwater. You may not like it, but we're the base of the modern GOP. Its entire electoral strength is anchored to us. Your states - like Iowa - are the outlying buoys in the harbor that casually drift our way from time to time.
It's a national party anchored in the south - its strongest, largest, and most reliable electoral base. That's why you didn't hear anything about "swing states" in the old CSA. They were all on the periphery of yankeeland (Ohio, Iowa) or the periphery of the left coast (Colorado, Nevada). Republicans win in the south, have to fight to win as they move closer to yankeeland, and lose as they get deeper into yankeeland.
The GOP only took six states in the 'old confederacy' in '56, three in '60, five in '68, four in '52, none in '48...or '44...or '40...or '36. Y'all have come late to the Party of Lincoln, and then you waltz in and act like you own the place.
Cling to your delusions if you wish. The strength of the GOP was in the plains and in the mountain states when you all were pissing yourself over FDR. But as I said, you've come late to the Party of Lincoln, but better late than never.
Your math is off.
There are 9 western states plus Alaska, making 10, that DID NOT EXIST AS STATES in 1861.
There are three states whose territorial predecessors cast their lot with the Confederacy - Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Mexico which were at the time Indian Territory and Arizona Territory, repsectively.
There is one border state - Kentucky - that was officially neutral in the war but had persons fighting on both sides.
Of the existing states in 1861 who clearly and decisively cast their lot with the yankees ONLY FOUR voted for Bush - Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, and Indiana. That is nowhere near the 19 you claim.

That's OK. He still would have made room for all you good 'ol southern boys. And if Lincoln would have welcomed you then who am I to complain? The Party of Lincoln has room for all sorts of people.

Wlat has since gone missing much like his "hero" Michael Moore (and those are Wlat's own words in quotations, not mine). Educated speculation has it that he's holed up in a stable somewhere.

Considering that ALL of the states of Lincoln abandoned it in 1964, it's no longer accurate to call it the party of Lincoln. The GOP today is the party of Goldwater and Reagan. Only FOUR states from Lincoln's entire union in 1861 voted for Bush this year, and two of them (Ohio and Iowa) only barely. Meanwhile Bush won every single state of the old CSA by a decisive margin.
George Bush is STILL a Texan. Conservative = Southern, etc.
And if you think John C. Calhoun wasn't a Conservative, then you are sadly mistaken. Sounds like rhetoric that comes from the "Peoples Republic of Austin"
Nah. They left the GOP in '64 to piss themselves over LBJ. Only the south voted for Barry and this year only four of Lincoln's old "union" states voted for Bush, two of them barely so.
Both of whom were proud to be members of The Party of Lincoln. Sorry, if you don't like the name. Maybe the Democrats The Party of Jefferson Davis will take you back.
