This person is looking to hurt Safeway's reputation. No gorcery stores are looking for ways to screw people out of money, it is usually human error that causes overcharges. But I will say that their receipts are difficult to read and somewhat annoying.

This sounds like total BS to me.

I am in grad school and the Safeway club card keeps me alive!

I have rarely/never had a problem with getting the discounts. Frankly, don't buy very much from them which is not discounted.

I think this article answers my question..."Where is Lyndon LaRouche's speechwriter now?"

Ahh, damn, I just got a brand new keyboard and now it's virtually ruined. And that was good coffee too! Thankfully it didn't hit the monitor this time, but it was a close thing. *ROTFLMAO*

Don't like Safeway's practices? Don't shop there.

We only shop at Safeway because it is just around the corner. Prices without the club card are a ripoff. The produce is lousy and the meat is not much better (even with their "Ranchers Reserve"). The inventory control sucks so they are frequently out of common items. Don't hold a grudge because they run a lousy store, just don't give them your business.

Don't have Safeway in Indy but Wal-Mart is killing Kroger these days.

"which is not discounted."

The 3-day old meats that are marked down?

I think like any store it depends on your local store. Our HEB is great - nice staff, always well marked prices.

But I only shop there when I need something "quick" - the bulk of my shopping is done at Costco for meat, cheese, butter, milk and a few frozen things - then Walmart for just about everything else. HEB is just generally too expensive.

He's right. And it gets worse. Do you know why the dairy shelves in Safeway stores are stocked from the back? So they can watch you from there while you pick between 2%, No Fat, Low Fat, half and half and Vitamin D dairy products. Where do you think all those spare checkers hang out while waiting for the PA system call: "Jerry we need another checker up front"?

And you noticed this at the bottom of the, uh, essay?

HEB can be cheaper, but their stock is usually stale in most of the Houston HEB's that I've frequented, so it kind of negates any price advantage.

You are so wrong on this statement. I have never seen any stale products from HEB.

We don't have Safeway where I live - but I used to work extended periods in Butte, MT. At first I would go to the Safeway for groceries and even got one of their cards. But found that by going to SuperWalmart I could get EVERYTHING I would get at Safeway and save almost 25 percent. No more Safeway for me... It outraged me to pay their prices - even WITH the card.

Have you jumped ship and become a union rabble rouser?

Safeway's fight to stop the growth of 'health plans' is beneficial to each and every individual who wishes to be free. Health plans are a foot in the door to socialism; if you need to go to the doctor, then go, but if you don't then you shouldn't have to pick up the tab for those who do.

Hey, all of his observations may be correct, however, all this teaches us is CAVEAT EMPTOR.

This is a man who REALLY holds onto a gripe...based on this:

I'm not even sure Safeway was using club cards in 1997.

I shop weekly at our local Vons (Southern California Safeway stores), and I save a HUGE amount of money using two tools:
1) The Vons Club Card
and, most importantly
2) A little secret that my wife and I stumbled upon earlier this year -- http://www.thegrocerygame.com

Between coupons and club card savings, I save on average 50-60% of my grocery bill. You should see the jaws drop on the people behind me in line when my the monitor goes from a bill of $250 down to $115 in a matter of seconds...
