I spoke with Sen. Rick Santorum's officer earlier today, and the press sec. just sent me this email ---
Comments from Senator Santorum on Senator Specter's comments on the judicial nomination process:
"Recent news articles have reported comments made by Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) about the judicial confirmation process. Earlier today, I asked Senator Specter to clarify his comments, which he did in a statement. In that statement, he clarified that he does not support a litmus test for nominees with regard to their stance on abortion.
"Senate Republicans are committed to approving all of the President's judicial nominations, despite the Democrats' rhetoric that they are committed to block judges who fail their litmus tests. This week's election increased the number of Republican Senators to 55. I am hopeful that with this increase we can overcome the Democrat's filibustering tactics.
"In the new Congress, I look forward to working with Senator Specter to guarantee that every judicial nominee put forth by President Bush has an up-or-down vote on the floor of the United States Senate."
ME NEITHER!!!!!!! He already has said he wants to " Bring us to the CENTER".......HEY SPECK, THOSE THAT JUST VOTED THE PREZ into office again are NOT, I repeat, are not at the CENTER!!!!!!!!!
I cannot express my outrage at "Specter the Defector's" threat to Bush!!! How dare he? I sent an email to Bill Frist demanding that Specter not be placed in charge of the Judiciary Committee and hope that everyone else does too! We have an historic opportunity here, folks.
reporting for freeping duty!!! Who, where , what, do we do to stop this before it gets started????
We need to dig up those articles and send them to Frist. Beware the snake in the grass.
I hope that Santorum also got his word that he wouldn't be obstructive, either.
Arlen Specter is and idiot, he makes me have to vote for every individual candidate insted of pulling the lever straight republican.
bttt
But I'll believe the rule is changed when I see it changed. Too many of them like the extra power they get from that unconstitutional use of the cloture rule.
i don't care who is in the presidency or the majority, when the Constitution says they must give their advise and consent then 40 of them cannot say otherwise and prevail.
Over 40 years you might not be disqualified but over 41, it is pretty difficult to get over the silver bullet theory.

"HEY SPECK, THOSE THAT JUST VOTED THE PREZ into office again are NOT, I repeat, are not at the CENTER!!!!!!!!!"
I think Ed Koch voted for the President. I'd say he's left of center on many social issues including Judges.
Many who voted for the President this time voted for security reasons and to support him during war time. Many left of center democrats voted for President Bush.
My guess is that Specter was reminded by George W. Bush that John Kerry won Pennsylvania, so this White House doesn't owe that state sh!t without some concessions from its members of Congress.
If Arlen should get to be chairman, I suspect he's going to be VERY careful now.
Stari Decisis is "over-ruled" by the actual Constitution, Senator - except, perhaps, in Scottish Law where they have no Constitution to consult. I'm no lawyer. but even I know that and I am not an exclusive member of the World's Greatest Deliberative Body who has for years been sucking down martinis with my esteemed collegues Teddy and Pat and Chuckie!
If Stari Decisis were the overriding factor in any decision, then a decision could never be reversed once uttered from the bench. But, we know courts often do reverse bad decisions for good cause. Being in violation of the Constitution is one of those good causes - no matter how long it has been protected by sly courts and spineless judges. There are numerous clauses in the Constitution Roe v Wade violates, not the least of which include the 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th Amendments.
Keep Specter more than 1500 feet from the Judiciary Committee, please! He is more dangerous than a gangbanger with a kilo of meth, a loaded handgun and an attitude.
Don't count on Snowe, Collins, or Chaffee to go along with the program. Then again, some Dems who know that '06 is looming for them, might re-consider, like NB Nelson.
It's situations like this that illustrate why I love Free Republic so much.
Spectre opens his mouth, makes a threat, and in a few hours we have cowered him into submission.
Note the progression:
Spectre makes threat,
Posts appear on FR,
FReepers respond with FAX, phone, and e-mail
Spectre backs down.
Did we really do this???
Cool.
And what on earth would their incentive be to leave the majority party to join the minority?
