I would love to have some advice on my nephew's situation...
He's attending a private school in CT, and for several months up through the election, his history teacher would wear Kerry buttons and openly opine about how Bush instituted drastic cuts in schools, about how he's totally against women's rights on a plethora of issues, how Kerry is much better for the country, how there's going to be a draft, etc etc etc.
I was furious, but chose not to say anything, thinking that this will all go away shortly, as he just started at this school and this will go away shortly, right after the election...
I was wrong. Yesterday, the teacher printed out a document from Kerry's site, telling us what he would have done if elected. It also showed some of the hate mongering towards the President. The assignment for the students was to write a detailed letter to John Kerry showing what a great campaign he ran, how the kids are so proud of him, and how they're upset that Bush won.
My nephew, having just turned 15, isn't all that political, but is savvy enough (I certainly help educate him) to know what the truth is. He refused to write the letter, and refused to read the whole (propoganda) document. He said that he didn't believe that Bush was against women's rights... The teacher twisted this, as she interpreted this to mean that my nephew didn't believe in women's rights. How disgraceful.
I got a call from him yesterday asking me to level with him - he wanted to know if there will really be a draft, as every other kid in his class believes it, hook, line, and sinker. I assured him that it was a total lie.
I've placed a call into the head of upper school studies, and am awaiting a return call. I went into this with one of his co-workers on the phone, but she has no power to act upon it.
My question to anyone that can offer advice... What recourse do I have? Is it an issue of free speech and the teacher can tout her Kerry/Edwards button at will, AND teach kids about this stuff openly, WITHOUT being objective? Am I jeopordizing his school experience (grades, etc) by complaining about this? Should I ask him to bite the bullet and ignore all that's going on?
Would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks
You are that school's customer and you should go to the headmaster and express your displeasure. And bring other parents with you, if possible.
There's no reason to put up with this garbage.
How about home schooling or Christian School?
Where are the parents? Should this not be their job after all they are paying the bills (I assume) for the private school?
Get him an account here on FR and confront the teacher.
Go to public schools where this would never happen./s
My daughter(14) slammed her history teacher in front of the class for his Kerry lies. Public school.
Change schools and let them know why you did it...If this is a Private school as you state, then someone is paying for it...Pull him out and hit them where it hurts...In their pocketbook...
And it's not a First Amendment issue. THis indiidual is free to say whatever they want on their own time.
If you're footing the bill for the private school, move him somewhere else...although it may be just as bad. Unless you're the kid's guardian or in full charge of his upbringing, you probably can't do much else besides clarify things for him when he asks.
And as you're withdrawing your child from that school, you can make it loudly clear that you are not paying for your child to be eductated by the likes of this teacher, nor are you paying to have the administration of that school allow that sort of crap.
And you should make sure to cc. all of the other parents on your letter. You might be very surprised how few of them know what's going on.
Almost identical situation ongoing in Cranston, RI...
We're now in a position to takeon indoctrination firsthand.
Echo your request for ideas...
I hope that he is not going to "Chilton". Rory got brainwashed there.
Thanks. Exactly how I feel - the total fee is just over $30,000.
Where are his parents???? I would start with them first!
She then took him on with a letter to the school paper about her class visiting the nearby prison to meet with all the innocent prisoners......suggested they visit the nearest nursing home instead!
Use this as an opportunity to speak up.....might be surprised that some of the teachers agree and will be supportive.
Buy him a gift subscription to National Review.
Hey it is a private school. Public schools are not much better.
The high school where my daughter attends in the teachers parking lot was a truck with JFKerry stickers plastered all over the tailgate. Painted upon the back glass was the following.
A VOTE FOR GEORGE BUSH IS
A VOTE FOR BIGOTRY
I wanted to take a picture of it, however, because there are security cameras all over the place thought better of it, since the scare that terrorists might be looking at our schools, I did not want to do anything that might appear suspicious.
Pulling him out, unfortunately is not an option, as the tuition will not be refunded.
