A new report from inside the John Kerry campaign suggests that in the final weeks of the campaign former President Bill Clinton advised John Kerry to come out in favor of local ballot measures in 11 states.
According to the latest issue of Newsweek, 'Looking for a way to pick up swing voters in the purple states, former President Bill Clinton, in a phone call with Senator Kerry urged the backing of local bans on same sex marriages.
Kerry respectfully listened, then told aides, 'I'm not ever going to do that.'
The advice is not wholly inconsistent with the Clinton record: He signed the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act, which forbids the government from sanctioning same sex marriages.
The federal DOMA also prevents those same couples from acquiring acess to the Social Security system.

Possibly true but I tend to doubt it.
Sounds like Mr. Is is doing a combination of CYA and self-egrandising.

This is one of the few areas in which Kerry merits respect for taking a position and sticking to it. (True, he DID claim to be "against gay marriage" at the federal level, but suffice it to say that he could have been a lot MORE of a hypocrite by taking Clinton's advice.)

Just thank God that Kerry didn't have Clinton's political sense.
Like the sense that cost the democrats the house and senate in 94
Or the sense that let him get oral sex from an overage teeny bopper after already having had to go on TV and apologize for the Flowers affair or the fact that the VERY FIRST thing people remember about his presidency is the MONICA STORY or that despite a booming economy peace and a media kissing his butt he couldn't get 50% in 96
