They campaigned tirelessly, wrote huge cheques and threatened to leave the country if George W Bush retained the White House.
This week the gloom and dejection on America's "blue" coasts was palpable, as many Left-leaning Californians and New Yorkers weighed up the prospect of another four years of Republican rule.
In the country's political language, "blue" states are those won by Democrats and "red" states are Republican.
Colour-coded result maps showed coastal fringes of blue with a vast slab of red in between, as Republicans romped home in the south and mid-west, thanks in no small measure to evangelical Christians.
Gleeful Right-wing commentators are calling on the actor Alec Baldwin, who said he would leave if Mr Bush won the 2000 election, to make good on his promise now that Mr Bush has an uncontested victory. "This time there's no ambiguity to take refuge in," one said.
Unsurprisingly, few coastal dwellers who pledged to move abroad were actually packing their bags. But the quandary they face is acute. As one Californian put it: "Last time [when Democrats won the popular vote] was OK because we could feel righteous in our indignation. But this time, we really are the minority."
Instead, many have been counselling one another and focusing on the question of what kind of candidate could secure a Democratic win? A celebrity, perhaps, à la Reagan or Schwarzenegger? Activists scouring the Hollywood A-list singled out Tom Hanks.
Meanwhile, a humorous reworking of America's boundaries flew about the internet. It shows Democrat-voting coastal areas tied into a "United States of Canada" and the remaining "red" centre renamed "Jesusland".
"I don't feel like a member of society any more, I'm completely detached from the rest of the country," said Chris Jackson, 36, music director for the E! entertainment network in Los Angeles.
"If it wasn't for my new job and my girlfriend, I'd leave right now. I had made plans, even talked to a Canadian friend about possibly marrying to get citizenship. Can California, the rest of the west coast and New York secede?"
In Hollywood, the post-election depression has been particularly severe. During his campaign, Senator John Kerry called on a star-studded cast including Bruce Springsteen, whose blue-collar credentials gave the campaign a significant boost.
But Martin Grove, a columnist on the Hollywood Reporter, said the "media giants who own Hollywood" were quite satisfied.
The "real story" was of the two losers: Mr Kerry and Michael Moore, the anti-Bush film director whose Fahrenheit 9/11 lambasted the president.
"Moore campaigned vigorously with a 60-city tour of key states. This is a major defeat for him."
I bet we could take up a collection and even provide them money for travel expenses to leave! Canada seems like a perfect fit to me!
The supermarket.
Some boobs over at DU were talking about a revolution
One of the saner types pointed out that THE OTHER SIDE HAS ALL THE GUNS
I laughed to myself the rest of the night
ROFL. There's enough guns on my street alone to pin down any offensive they might mount, and we're in the belly of the beast.
My very first job was at a gun club. I triple-dog-dare them to try an insurrection.
I have an idea! Lets move all the liberals to Maine and then we can gift wrap it and give it to Canada. There was a war fought over Northern Maine a long time ago and the joke was the Americans lost. From the looks of your county map, Northern Maine is prime liberal country anyway.
Perhaps I was not clear in my previous post. I would in no way stop the liberals from leaving the US for wherever they want to go to, including Hell for all I care. My position is that I am not willing to surrender one square mile of this country to the liberals. If they cannot live with the Constitution as it was originally meant to be and they cannot live with religion as being a part of our social fabric, then they can leave the country.
I believe that the notion of a peaceful seperation is unrealistic (especially when you consider who we are talking about-LIBERALS). As I stated in my previous post, the most powerful military in the world is conservative by nature and they have overwhelmingly supported Bush and his agenda. They would side with the "Reds" against the "Blues". We can forcefully expel the liberals to Canada and keep ALL OF AMERICA for the "Reds".
I have been laughing at some of the comments -- think the libs going to Canada is a great idea! I liked the one about giving Maine to Canada -- might want to throw in Vermont as well!
This question has already been addressed. The answer was "No".
BTW we'd all be more than happy to push San Francisco into the bay and you libs can float it to Canada where it belongs.
I have also seen and heard a great deal of talk about secessionism, civil war, rioting and enmasse emmigration coming from the Left. We already know that violence is not outside the realm of possibility vis-a-vis the Left. We also know that they even had a play about assassinating our leaders so this is not so far outside the realm of possibility. I find this chilling. Question: What would be the reaction of us conservatives, if our president was assassinated by the far left? I shudder to think on it.
"Dems don't win states they win cities."
Well said my friend.
Cheers,
knews hound
ping me on this subject please...thanks!
THAT'S IT!!
Rjmeagle is right! Why should we give up our land by letting them have any of the states? If they're not happy here, they can just move to Canada. I live in Illinois (Chicago suburb). I'm shocked to see how "red" Illinois is outside of Chicago! I was thinking if Illinois joined the "Blue State Alliance" I'd have to move to Virginia!
The thing that makes most of those states blue is the big cities with their heavy black populations that went 88% for Kerry
Gary,
Don't worry about the Canadians. We don't like them and they don't like us! Simply, use our GUNS to force the liberals to leave and the Canadians to acquiesce!
I notice you are coming around to my point of view: no secession, but expulsion!
Maybe we could institute an exchange program....Canada gives us their conservatives and we give them our liberals.
