French Shoot Down Ivory Coast Warplanes
AP ^ | 11.06.04

Government warplanes bombed a rebel stronghold Saturday, killing a French peacekeeper and injuring 20 other people, and French troops responded by shooting down two military planes and an attack helicopter, U.N. officials said.

The violence threatened to drag French and U.N. peacekeepers into Ivory Coast's renewed civil war, sparked when army hardliners Thursday broke a cease-fire after more than a year of relative peace and launched airstrikes on rebel-held cities.

The government warplanes struck the northern town of Bouake on Saturday afternoon, killing the French soldier, U.N. mission spokesman Jean Victor Nkolo said. It was not clear whether the 20 injured were French soldiers or others, or what the air raid was targeting.

Soon after, a U.N. military spokesman said French forces shot down two Ivory Coast warplanes and an attack helicopter over rebel territory.

This is France's biggest victory since they sank the Greenpeace unarmed, civilian "Rainbow Warrior" ship to the bottom of the sea!

Wait a tick! Did the frogs get a global permission slip for this little raid or does having the UN there automatically make it o'tay.

Does this pass the Global Test? Did they consult with their allies before committing this aggressive act? What about the UN? Sounds kind of unilateral to me!

Why isn't Amnesty International and the International Red Cross criticizing and skewering Kofi Anan and the French for having 'live' ammo? Shouldn't they use rubber bullets??????

The missed point of this article is that the French are on the side of the Islamist rebels in the north, NOT the side of the democratic non-muslim government in the south.

This is totally disgusting...

When was the vote in the 'general assembly' of the un? Why weren't china, vietnam, uruguay or Iceland consulted on this grave issue? Is this an example of french warmongering in preparation of an all-out french assualt on freedom everywhere?
