Forget that press conference. How about Specter's previous record? How about Scottish law? How about Chief Justice Rehnquist? Why do you actually want this guy to head the judiciary committee?
That's not many members.
The Post-Gazette endorsed Sen. Specter saying that he promised its editorial board no "extremists" would be approved for the bench.
?
That's it make them go stand in the corner. I'm serious, put them in some peon position until they learn. I am SO sick of RINOs
:)Just checking to see if you are awake.
Again, let's see the exact quote from Specter and not a liberal journalist informing us of their "interpretation" of what Specter said.
Look... we love watching when the lefties turn on each other and eat their own. Why is it so hard to see through the agenda when liberals try to stir up Republicans to do so?
No, I WON'T forget the press conference because this whole "crisis" right now is simply conservatives being played as fools by a Democrat operative out to damage our Senators. Ticks me off that so many of us are falling for it.
I know Specter's previous record. I don't like the guy and he is not conservative enough for my tastes, but he has been with us on important votes such as banning partial birth abortions, voting for Laci and Conner's Law and saving Clarence Thomas for us in the Supreme Court. And I would prefer that Specter NOT head the Judiciary Committee but don't think he is a danger enough for us to cause a bloodbath among Republican Senators. Now we even have threads accusing Santorum and Bush of treason because of this Specter controversy.... sorry, it's going way too far now.
Specter is the one who attacked Bush right after the primary. What more do you need? We can't afford to have someone who doesn't believe in the Constitution there. There is a good chance, that not a single Bush Supreme Court nominee will be confirmed in four years, even if Specter wasn't the chair. The bottom line is whether the 59 million people who voted for Bush get their say, or whether the 50 some million who voted for Kerry get their say.
Actions speak louder than words: they didn't just claim that Specter said it, they endorsed him.
No, Specter is not that dumb. But if you have read his statements and do not see the veiled threat, then you read it differently than I do. But this does not mean that we were snookered by an AP writer (although I was glad to learn of her background and will keep it in mind if I see her name again.)
Exactly, Tamsey. This whole "Specter warns the President" nonsense was invented by an ultraliberal AP reporter looking to damage the Republican Party. I find it unbelievable that the AP is able to twist conservatives into attacking someone who has clearly promised and articulated opposition to the Dem filibuster strategy. We've beat the Dems at the polls and now we need to concentrate on beating them in Congress - not tossing out conservative Senators from the Party.
I'm sorry, in Specter you have a fiend (correct spelling) in Pennsylvania.
Yeah you'd have to be blind to miss those hints.
Dern tootin. Specter is not just some *doh* politico. He is a wily lawyer.
I'd agree with that, but not the way you're thinking. The reporter just wanted to coax Specter to stick another thumb in Bush's eye. Which he gladly did. Fortunately making it impossible for Bush's still charged up base to ignore.
Specter didn't have anything to do with those ridiculous signs. The group that put those out was cooked up by Democrat operatives Gary Parenti and Steve Pigeon http://216.239.39.104/search?q=cache:V_sZs2emyKsJ:www.niagarafallsreporter.com/column186.html+%22gary+parenti%22+pigeon&hl=en&client=googlet
and "Republican" Roger Stone who's last political adventure was using an Independence Party candidate to try to sabotage Pataki... http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ICQ/is_2002_Nov_11/ai_94386529
As if that weren't enough, just use your simple common sense for a second. Specter ran an enormous lead in the polls all the way up through election day. Why in the WORLD would he consider putting out such silly signs that his opponents including Hoeffel and third-party Clymer merely used to try to hurt him?
In 2003, Specter joined three colleagues in writing President Bush to urge that he, in turn, urge the Supreme Court to recognize racial diversity as a compelling state interest justifying the use of racial classifications. "We are assertive when the circumstances warrant it, and I think this issue does," said Specter in the Washington Post. "There are things we can do about it in the Senate. When Supreme Court nominees come up, you can bet I'll be on this point."
What more do you need?
Okay... think for a second.... what would be the result if Specter had said instead, "I promised President Bush that I will vote to approve every one of his nominees to the bench."
That's what we all want to hear, yes? Problem is, if Specter comes out and says it, he will automatically disqualify himself from the Judicial Committee because he will be promising in public to completely bypass the "Advise and Consent" purpose of the committee itself.
If he says it to Frist and Bush we will never know about it.... but they will. If they put him in the Chair it will be because they are confident he won't sabotage the nominees. If they think he WILL sabotage the judge picks they won't be utter morons and let him control the committee.
What more do YOU need?
