Distraught over the re-election of President George W. Bush, a Georgia man traveled to New York City, went to Ground Zero and killed himself with a shotgun blast, police said yesterday.
The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, 25, was discovered just before 8 a.m. yesterday when a worker for the Millennium Hotel looking at Ground Zero from an upper floor saw a man lying atop the concrete structure through which the 1 and 9 subway lines run.
The worker, thinking the man was sleeping, alerted colleagues and the Port Authority police were notified.
But when they got to Veal's body, they realized he had killed himself with a shot to the head from a .12-gauge shotgun.
No suicide note was found, but according to a Port Authority police source, family members said Veal, a registered Democrat, was despondent over Bush's defeat of Sen. John Kerry. A second source said Veal, who lived in Athens, Ga., and worked for the University of Georgia, was also adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq.
More than three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Ground Zero remains a top tourist attraction, the site rife with symbolism.
Visitors there yesterday reacted in different ways to news of Veal's suicide. Bobbie Jensen, 54, a Republican from Phoenix, said that while she understood how Bush's victory disturbed those...

was it Michael Moore ???
Because in America, people are generally not searched without probable cause.
Guys like Dan Rather and Michael Moore would be the first to lay the blame for this at the front gate of the Whitehouse. This is, of course, the mentality that goes into the creation of suicide bombers and other participants in "martyrdom operations." People get indoctrinated with what to think, instead of learning how to think for themselves. I'll bet this guy was cut from the same cloth as that Burkett jerk who gave the made-up documents to Mary Mapes. What a stupid waste.
I blame the left and their brainwashing for this.
(Also, this kid was obviously not balanced.)
Sorry, I'm WAY past done being "nice" to liberal wackos. I had a long argument with a friend today; she always was a little left-leaning - but she has totally swallowed the M. Moore koolaid. I am tired of these immature punks demanding that we "ignorant rednecks" bow to their superior (yet inexperienced) intellect. Bullsqueeze!
His illness was self-induced, and suicide is ALWAYS the coward's way out. HE WAS NOT A VICTIM. I just don't buy the notion that "his religion" drove him to it. Stupid is as stupid does.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm glad this sicko took himself out of the gene pool before he could assist in screwing up another generation of Americans.
One down 55,949,406 to go!!!
As tempted as I am to make a joke about this, this guy was obviously troubled to begin with. What is absolutely vile to me are those on the left who are using this poor idiot's demise as another opportunity to spew their venom at the President.
To put things in perspective, young men and women the same age as this guy are tonight risking their lives for our country (and the rest of the unappreciative free world) as they go after pure evil in Fallujah. Kids in American uniforms, thousands of miles from home are going to be killed protecting us tonight. Sorry if I don't spend much time pondering or caring why this Georgia kid did what he did.
Libs need to get a grip. "Ground Zero" takes on new meaning.
Alas the world is less one more weak-minded fool. I wish there would be more of this natural selection.
This is really bizarre. Someone who is very distraught over at the loss of John Kerry goes to what use to be the World Trade Center and commits suicide. 2,742 people lost their lives on September 11, 2001, a horrible day no one will forget.
Kerry actually voted not to use a 12 gauge shotgun before he voted to use it, if he used it at all, by the way where the hell is P.E.T.A. the lefty's are the biggest hypocrites that God ever punched a a$$hole into, same as N.O.W. with Patricia Ireland, when Clinton was messing with all those women not a peep was uttered by them, an org. supposedly dedicated to women's rights, had he been a Republican they would have been screaming for his head. None of them have any credibility.
Another one is weeded out of the gene pool, good! Forget the mental problems.... to be despondent over an election, is just totally lame.
It looks like his studies were paid for by the new Comintern - George Soros' Open Society foundation.
Mentally ill = democRAT
Guess he missed Michael Moore's post-election encouragement.
Some double-ought buckshot, is my guess.
IIRC, gauge is a function of bore diameter and weight of shot. 20 gauge means that it takes 20 lead balls that diameter to weigh 1 pound. Ditto 16 balls to the pound for 16 gauge, 12 balls to the pound for 12 gauge. So in a theoretical 1 gauge shotgun, the bore would be such that 1 lead ball would weigh 1 pound. So a .12 gauge would be, as somebody has already stated, the size of a field artillery piece or maybe a 5 inch dck gun.
Or, on the other hand, I guess the .410 gauge measurement standard could be used, .410" being the actual bore of the shotgun. In that case, a .12 would be about 2/3 the size of a BB (.177 cal.).
Now I'm gonna pour a shot of Chivas and ponder what I just wrote...
I only stated what I believe in my heart, I make a statement like that because I am 58 years old and have seen many, many politicians come and go in my lifetime, and Reagan is the best, and if you believe that also, God bless you too.
Sad story ..sick man for sure..Whats just as sick are the responses , especially the Russian students comments. Another foreign moron. Go back to Russia schoolboy.
I have sympathy for his family and friends, but that being said, there is more whacked out 'reality' than this man had. Rush commented the other day that the DUmmies were running a poll that President Bush's reelection was a worse day in our history than 9/11.
That sense of values is so warped that I can't even begin to understand it. I have no idea and I never will. Everyone I hear crying about Lurch's loss will make me think of that now and I won't be able to have any sympathy for them.
