Actually, the lower the gauge, the larger the weapon. Witness 10 gauge vs. 20 gauge. So a .12 gauge shot gun might be field artillery-sized or greater. :0]

Yes but .12 would be 12 one hundreths of a 12 gauge since there is no .12 gauge that I know of.
