Families of 9/11 victims yesterday reacted with shock, sympathy and anger after a Georgia man killed himself at Ground Zero on his 25th birthday because he was distraught over President Bush's re-election."What was the purpose of doing that?" said Vincent Ragusa, whose son, Michael, a fireman, died along with nearly 3,000 others at the World Trade Center.
"My son was fighting for his life, and I don't want to say something ill about the dead, but he is so selfish to take his life at the site. I don't get it."
The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, was discovered on a concrete slab in the construction pit near the Church Street subway entrance Saturday morning. A bottle of Jack Daniel's was by his side, and a 12-gauge shotgun lay across his body. Authorities believe that Veal, who was engaged to be married, killed himself sometime Friday his birthday, friends said.
Law-enforcement officials and friends said Veal, a project coordinator at the University of Georgia Research Center who also did political polling, had been depressed over the outcome of the election.
Friends also said he may have killed himself to protest the war in Iraq.

Regina Townsend, who lost her brother, Peter West, a Cantor-Fitzgerald employee, on 9/11, was more sympathetic.
"How warped. I feel a great loss for this man and his family," she said. "I have the greatest sorrow for a person who felt so hopeless.
"Having said that, I can't compare that to the death of my brother," Townsend said. "Peter was filled with life. His death was so unique, and he had everything to live for. He has a new grandchild on the way, and we are filled with hopefulness."

Wonder who he worked for... Maybe he took Exit polls?
--There's a pun in there somewhere, but I'm not going there.
I don't have time to check, so could someone just tell me at which point in the article they blame Bush?
First Paragraph - Bush gets blamed....
Looks like the guy gave himself the spanking he never got as a child.
The purpose was to show his solidarity with Al Qaeda, like all liberals have done since 911. Bush winning the election greatly distressed him because his heroes will continue to have a difficult time attacking this country again, so he went back to ground zero to relive the greatest day in his life, 911.
That is a mean spirited comment; even at the most, you know nothing about this man's background beyond what the news says.
The reasons a person gives for suicide are part of their delusion. Depression or other mental imbalance are the cause, not any external factors. This article is irresponsible and tacky in its focus on this unfortunate young man's 'reasons.' The press remains an enemy of truth.
I know enough about suicide to know that it comes from deep-seated anger.
Suicide is lashing out at people. The people at the receiving end of suicide (family and friends) are not saddened as much as they are ticked off that the person did that to them. Read the comments in the article.
What I am saying, since I evidently failed to make myself clear, is that the person was not able to cope., so he took it out on his family, friends, and the world. THAT is someone who needed discipline as a child, as in a spanking, which evidently was needed in this person.
We need not know everything about a person in order to make generalized observations.
I agree, it's an awful comment, but leave it for others to see. In this case the answer to free speech is more free speech.
Second Quote: "he had everything to live for. He has a new grandchild on the way..."
LOL, either the Veal family procreates faster than rabbits or the NY Post needs to hire themselves a new proof reader.
I've noticed the first reports stated there was no suicide note. I've also observed he reportedly was found with a shotgun beside the body and labeled a suicide. All reports of his depression being caused by Bush's re-election have come from those who obviously didn't know him well enough to prevent his suicide.
Considering he was a poll taker, no suicide letter found, in NYC and found in the WTC compound, wouldn't it be equally as likely that he was Clintoncided as he was depressed over Bush's re-election?
(That's OK, chalk that up to Bush's fault, too)
Engaged to be married?????......I think my wife-to-be would come in importance before taking my live over who became president....This guy was the village idiot......
The second quote in your post is not referring to the man who killed himself. That was the sister of a man who died in the WTC speaking about her brother.
What I can't understand is this.....
Individuals who are in good mental health do not randomly commit suicide because a Presidential election does not have their desired result. People take their lives after a period of serious mental illness. They plan it out. I highly doubt that Mr. Veal's family and friends didn't know he was suffering from clinical depression.
Something is being left out of this story.
THANK YOU.
I always thought it was only the liberals who felt you could say what you wanted, as long as you agreed with them!
I hope it stays that way.
One less liberal nitwit in the world.
