NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - More than 4,000 U.S. Marines and Army troops punched their way into northeastern Fallujah on Monday, kicking off a massive assault dubbed Operation Phantom Fury that seeks to put an end to half a year of insurgent control of the Sunni Muslim city.

The prelude to the assault on the Askari neighborhood was a crushing air and artillery bombardment of the city that rose to a crescendo by Monday evening, with U.S. strike jets dropping bombs around the clock and big guns pounding the city every few minutes with high-explosive shells.

Meanwhile, insurgents in Baghdad and nearby Ramadi tried to keep up the pressure on the coalition forces with new attacks, including one on a Catholic church in the capital.

Earlier Monday U.S. troops had fought their way into the city's western outskirts, seizing two bridges over the Euphrates River and helping Iraqi soldiers take the city's main hospital in the first stage of a major assault on the insurgent stronghold.

The hospital and bridges to the west, along with the train station - 'bridgehead/beachhead' in the northeast...

It's going to be a pincers movement to concentrate and annihilate.

Analysis?

35 US soldiers captured in Fallujah: mosques

www.chinaview.cn 2004-11-08 17:09:09

FALLUJAH, Iraq, Nov. 8 (Xinhuanet)

Mosques in Iraq's restive city of Fallujah announced on Monday that the fighters inside the city have captured 35 US soldiers.

Loud speakers of the mosques blared out the news as US forces were trying to penetrate the rebel-held city, but the news could not be independently confirmed.

US troops and Iraqi special forces stormed into the western districts of Fallujah early Monday and seized the main city hospital and two key bridges over the Euphrates River.

US officials said there may be more fierce fighting to come if US forces try to enter downtown Fallujah on the east bank of the river.

George Patton Speech

I want you to remember that no bas*ard ever won the war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bas*ard die for his country. Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about America not wanting to fight – wanting to stay out of the war - is a lot of horse dung! Americans traditionally love to fight! All REAL Americans love the sting of battle …..

And HERE is the full statement.

Osama Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed in Falluja?

By Preetam Dutta, Special Correspondent
November 08, 2004

As US and Iraqi forces march ahead in Falluja, some special reward may be waiting for them. Rumor is rampant in Baghdad that the dreaded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Osama Bin Laden are trapped in Falluja. If the coalition forces are able to kill or capture both or either of them, it will be a major hit against terrorism.

does it bug anyone that this is happening in broad daylight??? is that protocol for house to house now?

Maybe our intel and plan are so good and our force so overwhelming that we don't need the advantage of the night to keep casualties down. Or maybe it's easier to distinguish terrorists from civilians in daylight.
