This map is large enough to see each county clearly, and has the shape of the States outlined in white.

The populations are by county. Portland concentrates in one or two counties, while Atlanta metro area covers over a dozen counties, and Houston metro area also covers a number of counties. Miami-Ft Lauderdale is only three or four counties, but two of them have most of the population. Etc.

Further possibility is that heights not only reflect county populations, but population density per square mile within the counties. Western metro areas like Portland and Houston are very much SPREAD OUT over a lot of square miles.

I live in Douglas County...one of the two Kansas counties to go blue...ours is home to Kansas University and the other is Wyandott...the home of Kansas City, Kansas.

That's because it is cursed with The People's Republik of Austin...

There are no counties in Alaska. Sometimes maps are drawn with judicial or census divisions instead.

My poor state, PA...the red counties are overwhelmed by Pittsburgh, Philly and its surroundings.

I do not like that ugly blue line snaking up the Mississippi River.

It's probably people who work the river barge traffic.

Whats going on in Colorado? I compared county maps (Dave Lieb's web site) from 2004 and 2000 and more counties went democratic this time than last.

Here in Missouri, Gore carried about 12 counties in 2000 while in 2004 GWB carried all but 3 (and St. Louis City).

The blue in the Sierra's and Rockies would be enviro's... same with Coconino County (along with NAU hippy-types). The North Coast of California is a bit of enigma -- San Francisco we all understand --but San Jose and Silicon Valley?

IIRC that area is almost as poor as the Apalachian region. Even many of the whites in that area live off the government. They all vote RATS because it has worked so well for them.<>sarcasm off

Supposedly, hispanic voters made Kerry more competitive. Bush won CO by 9% in 2000, but only 5.25% in 2004.

I got a shirt with this map 4 years ago that a got News Max .com and people were amazed. The more we show people "THIS MAP" the more people will give us Republicans another look.

Partially right. It indicates county vote BY CANDIDATE. For a counter-example, see Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and some of the red cities.

In 2000 someone drew up stats for counties that went for Gore, highest crime, highest taxes, highest school dropout rates, highest welfare, etc.

Would like to see if the figures tally with this year. b.
