SURE SIGNS BACKFIRED ON KERRY, DEMS
NEWSMAX.COM ^ | NOVEMBER 5, 2004 | JOAN SWIRSKY

Posted on 11/09/2004 7:10:56 PM PST by CHARLITE

All the “sure signs” for a Kerry victory were there. The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. The Boston Red Sox exorcised the “Curse of the Bambino.” The Washington Redskins – longtime predictors of presidential races – lost last Sunday, which has meant a loss for the incumbent since 1936. And to add to that trifecta, the stock market was skittish, surely a sign of an incumbent’s defeat at the polls.

But ...

Congratulations, America! You have done us proud! And congratulations, President Bush! Your decisive victory insures that Americans know and appreciate a good man and a strong leader when they see him. May God give you strength and health and good fortune in the years that lie ahead.

All that other crap is happenstance. "Pulling the lever" to stop evil is anything but!

The most annoying "sure sign" of a Kerry victory: "well, if the turnout is high, that's always good for the Democrats".

Until last week, Bill Clinton was the only Yalie ever re-elected, but he was a southpaw, too, which probably cancelled both curses (southpaws don't get re-elected).

One thing that I was told about maybe 20 years ago: the taller guy "always" wins. (That might've been true up to 20 years ago, I haven't followed it since.)

TS
I won't even speak of the zero curse 'cause there are lunatics out there.

"And to add to that trifecta, the stock market was skittish, surely a sign of an incumbent’s defeat at the polls."

The stock market was skittish only because of fear Kerry might win. It shot up when the results became known.

Kerry forgot the RedSox Rule: Everytime the Red Sox win the world series, the republicans win the next presidential election in a landslide. 100% of the time - never fails.

I believe that Gerald Ford is taller than Jimmy Carter.

Back in 1796 John Adams beat Thomas Jefferson--Jefferson was taller. I think John Quincy Adams was shorter than Andrew Jackson, but still he won the 1824 election.

Martin Van Buren won the 1836 election against three regional Whig candidates--William Henry Harrison, who beat him 4 years later, was certainly taller. I'm not sure about the others (Hugh Lawson White and Daniel Webster), but anyway Van Buren wasn't the tallest candidate.

There was also that curse that a President elected in a year ending with a 0 wouldn't last to the end of his term, but W did. I guess Reagan did break the curse when he survived the assasination attempt.

On second thought, I just realized his first term isn't over till Jan. Be careful out there W!

Boston's win in 1918 was their fifth World Series victory. The others were 1903, 1912, 1915, and 1916. The only one of those followed by a Republican victory was 1903.

Whenever the Florida Marlins win the World Series, the Republicans win the next Presidential election.

Since 1840 every President elected in a year ending in zero died in office, until Reagan, but not necessarily during that term: Harrison (1840, died 1841), Lincoln (1860, died 1865), Garfield (1880, died 1881), McKinley (1900, died 1901), Harding (1920, died 1923), Franklin Roosevelt (1940, died 1945), Kennedy (1960, died 1963). Lincoln and Roosevelt had been elected to another term.

Yes, the Republicans won in 1920 following the Red Sox win in 1918. I was taking that as a given and looking at the previous times they had won the World Series.
