KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Whiteman Air Force Base announced that an A-10 aircraft from the 442nd Fighter Wing accidentally released a small training munition Monday afternoon.
The accident happened at 3 p.m. Air Force officials said that the munition hit about 9 miles south of the Smoky Hill Tower, just outside the boundaries of the Smoky Hill range facility in Kansas, and caused a small grass fire. No one was hurt.
The aircraft safely returned here, where it is being inspected to help determine the cause of the accidental release.
The aircraft was on a training mission to the Smoky Hill range. The dropped munition, a BDU-33, is a roughly 20-pound training aide designed to give off a smoke charge to gauge the accuracy of practice bombing missions.
Whiteman officials said that a board of officers will investigate the incident.
Another "hey, watch this!" incident?
Well, at least they named the range correctly.
ooooops
Last week a school was shot up in NJ by military aircraft on a training mission.
I'm sorry, Major - I thought you said "Smoke that hill" !!
I didn't know there were any hills in KS?
Why didn't this report mention France attempting to surrender in response? Odd.
A week or so ago,a Polish built Iskra(basic turboprop trainer) of the Indian Airforce accidently released a practise bomb near an oil refinery.Thankfully-it was only carrying 25pound practise variants & nothing happened to the refinery.
Maybe we can talk the Air Force into using Columbia MO as a training range instead. :-)
Meet the newest Special Projects Officer for Whiteman...just in time for the annual Xmas tree sale and the Combined Federal Campaign.
Just one, in Wathena.
And most annoying is that in the NJ incident the brass from the base is still saying....we're investigating.
Naw, White Cloud's hill is bigger.
Don't Kansans go to Florida to see the hills?
Uh...what's this button do again??
I know that the percentage of liberals living here is pretty high, but George W. Bush DID carry this county (ok, by 92 votes only, but carry it he did).
Ping-ping--ping!
