New Mount St. Helens video shows glowing red growth

MOUNT SAINT HELENS, Wash. - The new lava dome inside the crater of Mount Saint Helens 50 miles north of Portland has grown a protrusion the size of a 30-story building that glows red at night.

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey released dramatic new video of that growth. Night video shows the hot lava dome glowing red. Scientists say it is the result of rising magma, or molten lava.

The lobe began building up last month and has grown to the size of an aircraft carrier. One section has risen 330 feet in the past ten days.

Scientists still have many questions.

"We don't ultimately know how long this is going to erupt, we don't know how big it's going to be when it stops, we don't know if there's going to be any larger ones in between now and when it stops" said Seth Moran, USGS.

No one seems to point out that the flow of lava is what built the mountain in the first place.

Logic would be that the lava will flow until the mountain is rebuilt. Such height would have to be obtained to make the hydrostatic weight greater than the pressure of the up-flowing lava...thus capping it off until it blows it's top again.

Very odd, those low amplitude, low frequency surfboard type waves that went on for something like 20 minutes.

Quake Hits Mt. Rainier, No Link to Volcano ERIN VAN BRONKHORST Associated Press SEATTLE - Mount Rainier shook with a 3.2-magnitude earthquake, but scientists said Tuesday the quake was not related to recent rumblings at Mount St. Helens, its sister volcano 50 miles to the south. The quake was centered one mile below the surface of Rainier's crater, said Bill Steele of the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network at the University of Washington.
