National : Can We Trust Senator Arlen Specter To Treat Bush Nominees Fairly?

by Rev. Louis P. Sheldon

Chairman, Traditional Values Coalition

Washington, DC – Those of us who have worked in Washington, DC for decades remember the shameful treatment that Judge Robert Bork received when nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan.

Judge Bork was viciously demonized by radical leftist groups like People for the American Way (PFAW). In fact, the level of hatred directed against Bork was so unique in our recent history that a new word was coined to describe such treatment: “Borking.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t just Senator Ted Kennedy or PFAW that destroyed the chances of Robert Bork to serve with dignity on the Supreme Court. It was also Senator Arlen Specter, a so-called “moderate” Republican. He bragged to the editors of the Pennsylvania Bucks County Courier Times in October: “I not only voted against Bork, I led the charge against him.” Specter should be ashamed of blocking this fine judge to the Supreme Court.

The trashing of Robert Bork became a model of how liberals routinely smear and destroy the reputations of any judicial nominee who believes in interpreting, not creating law while serving on the bench. And, Arlen Specter, in his own words, “led the charge” against Bork.

In a column written in April of this year, Robert Novak pointed out that the leftist atheist George Soros had donated to Specter’s re-election bid as well as the famous Christian-hater Alan Dershowitz and former Clintonista Harold Ickes. Soros spent millions to defeat George W. Bush and Ickes, with the Media Fund, ran a media smear campaign against Bush. Specter’s friends are the avowed enemies of Christians and the pro-family movement.

Today, Senator Specter is under fire for comments he made recently in Philadelphia over his expected appointment as the new chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He told reporters that he didn’t think that the Senate would confirm judges who are likely to “change the right of a woman to choose [and] overturn Roe v. Wade.”

Before his re-election to the Senate, he told the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he wouldn’t allow any “extremists” to be approved for the federal bench. “Extremists” are individuals who believe that life begins at conception and that abortion is the killing of an unborn child.

After a firestorm erupted over Specter’s comments in Philadelphia, he has issued a clarification of his remarks and has said he will treat Bush’s judicial nominees fairly, but why should we believe him? He has publicly stated he will block “extremists” to the court, and he has a long history of opposing court nominees who believe in judicial restraint.

Senator Arlen Specter does not deserve to serve as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The chairman of this committee must be a Bush loyalist who opposes judicial tyranny—not someone who is well-liked by the Christian and Bush haters Ickes, Soros, and Dershowitz.

Contact Frist and tell him you will not support his presidential quest in 2008 if he supports Specter now.

Arline should not have the chair. His comments make him unworthy to sniff the seat of the chair.

Hey...that doesn't sound to good ....O'Reilly is distracting me...I have him on..but I keep hearing this buzzing sound in the background while he talks to Rita Cosby...never mind.

What's his record?

No, not what's his voting record. What's his record on obstructing GOP action?

Has he ever joined in on a Democrat filibuster?

Has he ever voted to not send a Bush nominee to the floor?

of course, Virginia's Senior Senator, John Warner also voted against Bork .. after saying he would support him. Haven't been able to vote for the flip-flopping jerk since.
