Hillary Clinton got religion yesterday, calling it a mistake for the Democrats not to engage Evangelical Christians on their own turf - essentially ceding the vote to President Bush [related, bio].
``I don't think you can win an election or even run a successful campaign if you don't acknowledge what is important to people,'' she said at a speaking engagement at Tufts University. ``We don't have to agree with them. But being ignored is a sign of such disrespect. And therefore I think we should talk about these issues.''
Clinton said the Bible should be used to win debates over poverty the way Republicans tried to use it on gay marriage.
``No one can read the New Testament of our Bible without recognizing that Jesus had a lot more to say about how we treat the poor than most of the issues that were talked about in this election,'' she said.
The former first lady didn't bother answering the ``will she/won't she'' question on the collective mind of the 5,000 jammed into the Tufts gym - but she gave enough of a hint to delight the partisan crowd of Hillary '08 backers.
Noting that oppressed Afghans were able to get a woman on the ballot for president in recent elections, Clinton called it, ``a feat that puts Afghanistan women ahead of American women.''
The crowd laughed knowingly, then went wild with apparent encouragement of the Draft Hillary movement.
The outspoken New York senator also rained on President Bush's post-election honeymoon, casting doubt about success in the battle for Fallujah and hopes for a new round of Mideast peace talks if PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat dies.
She bluntly urged Bush to use the election ``mandate'' to win over allies to help in Iraq.
``What is past is past - we have a second-term president with, in his words, a lot of political capital,'' she said. ``And I would hope he would use it both at home and abroad.''
Look, everybody, the democrats have a new toy to play with - religion!
Expect to start seeing photos in the future of hillary! attending church on a regular basis. Carrying slick's huge Bible, if they can remember where they threw it.
Hillary is making her move...
Let the big government Dems try to use the Bible to justify their power grab. It won't work.
The record of Nimrod and the Tower of Babel, along with the history of Empires, Kings and nations that oppose the Kingdom of God, undercuts all such thin justification for the forced looting of productive citizens for wealth redistribution programs.
Bring it on, Hill. Theology scholars will eat your lunch.
"Big Boy"!
if they can remember where they threw it.
Not remember? Surely they wouldn't misplace Big Boy?
Sounds like Hills on a LISTENING thingy again, trying to find what will resonate well with the people. LOL
Translation: just give the Christians the jolly jerk-off. They'll never know the difference.
Surprise, Shrillary! We can smell molten evil of your caliber a mile away.
This from the woman who said that Mary and Joseph were a homeless unwed couple.
"Don't work, don't eat."
The corpse of the Kerry candidacy is still twitching, as the Hildabeast uses it as a steppingstone to 2008. Gotta admire these 'Rats, at least they know how to treat their fellow hyenas.
Dare I even ask what's "not to agree" with?
But being ignored is a sign of such disrespect.
Well, they managed to not only ignore us, but mock us, for the last 50 years.
And therefore I think we should talk about these issues.''
I am not aware of any "issues" in the Bible, are you?
The devil knows the bible like the back of his hand.
Jesus never advocated stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Compelled charity is meaningless and useless.
She will be fun to beat.
A badly mistaken move, she is far too ignorant of scriptures. She will make the mistake of lifting out a verse or two, to make a point, and a real Christian will eat her lunch.
Never let it be said that the Clintons failed to exploit an opportunity when they saw one. Sen Hill's seen this map. Unfortunately Hillary's words, deeds and senatorial record belie her newfound religiosity. (Bush won Iowa later.)
She's very shrewd. This tact isn't surprising at all.
