Energy: The oil under the permafrost of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge hasn't changed since the White House failed to get the green light to drill there 19 months ago. But the political climate has.
It was March 2003 when the administration's bid to open ANWR to oil development fell in the Senate by a vote of 52 to 48. But in January 2005, a new Senate hits town with four fresh members who are expected to support President Bush's wish to make use of the energy gift that awaits.

Since 1977, oil companies have pumped 12.8 billion barrels from Prudhoe Bay, about 100 miles to the west. And though Prudhoe may not be pristine, it's no environmental disaster either.
If it were, would its caribou population have expanded more than 10-fold to 32,000 from 3,000 since production began?
Funny how we never hear numbers like those from the environmentalists. Nor are we told how insignificant the ANWR field would be relative to the refuge and the rest of Alaska.

Democrats who supported drilling were Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, John Breaux and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Zell Miller of Georgia.
When skerry was blathering on about his post-election "plan" to bring the "passion" of his campaign to bear in the Senate, etc., one of the things he threw out was "Americans voted for energy independence."
Okay, but you, John, did not, because you voted against drilling the ANWR.
What am I missing here?
You must learn to hear and understand "liberal-speak".
In liberal-speak, "energy independence" doesn't mean you'll have more energy, it means you'll be forced to use less.
Think of it like you would "food independence" , which in the language of liberals translates to "mass starvation" in English.
Kerry meant using gerbils on treadmills to power our cars as opposed to internal combustion engines
BTTT!!!!!!
