SEVERAL dozen white women were raped in Ivory Coast in riots that have shaken the west African state since late last week, but no foreign nationals were killed, a French military source said today.
The top French soldier in Ivory Coast, General Henri Poncett, said that women had been raped in anti-French violence that erupted there over the last week.
Some French nationals evacuated on Wednesday from Abidjan to Togo spoke of the rape of women by "young patriots" loyal to President Laurent Gbagbo.
A diplomatic source in Abidjan had said he had no knowledge of any French national being killed, although several had been injured, including by blows from machetes.
"This time people were injured and the damage is considerable," the source said, recalling that no French national had been injured during the violence that erupted in January 2003 after the Marcoussis peace accord was signed.
But the military source in Paris later said that the "physical attacks" against women were the only ones committed against expatriates.

I bet the rape victims did not appreciate it when the french tried to surrender to them.

I remember reading mercenary Mike Hoare's Mercenary--his memoirs of putting down the bloody Simba revolt in the Congo--when I was a kid. I never nursed any illusions about bloody old africa from then on. This is really starting to look like "Congo Lite" with frenchies instead of Belgians. If only we could know what's really going on behind the scenes. I can only guess certain French politicians personal fourtunes are bound up in this place ("Blood for Cocoa?"). But I very much doubt the French role is going to last much longer, it won't take anything on the order of Dien Bien Phu or the Battle of Algiers disasters to make them cut and run this time.

So, two rampages by bloodthirsty savages that need immediate restraint by overwhelming military force, total French civilian deaths: 0. What is wrong with this picture? If you said "the spin, against pro Government citizens of the Ivory Coast", go to the head of the class. The northern Muslim forces do more mischief in one village on the average day. So which do the French protect, and which do they fire on?

For those in Rio Linda who do not see it, the French were asked how many innocent French civilians were killed in the rioting. The honest answer was "none", but that would not be adequate spin, so they came up with this.

There were 8 French and one American killed in the original bombing though. There were no Africans killed in the subsequent French bombing.
Strange that you would defend rioting and raping because there were no French deaths? I guess, for you, that sort of stuff is only bad if someone dies?

French imperialism at work. /sarcasm
To: monday
The French have assisted in the deaths of tens of thousands of government supporters by defending and flaking for the Muslim terrorists in the north. They should stop fighting the legitimate government. They should not have intervened in the first place, they should not have responded to the air strike by attacking the government rather than lodging a protest, and the riots are the predictable consequence of their egregious colonialist arrogance. They should get the heck out of the country, and stay gone. The only people who want them there are the killers in the north, sheltering behind lines and now under their air cover, in effect.
