The battle of Fallujah has uncovered unsuspected horrors. Yesterday US Marines discovered an underground prison containing at least two dead bodies and two emaciated men who were still alive.
Another Marine unit found five bodies in a locked house in northwest Fallujah, all the victims shot in the back of the head.
Marines rescued the Syrian driver kidnapped in August with two French journalists who are still missing. The man said that he had been separated from the reporters a month ago.
Reports emerged of 20 foreign fighters executed by Iraqi insurgents for refusing to fight as the Americans moved in. An Iraqi general said this week that he had found a “slaughterhouse” where al-Zarqawi’s al-Qaeda-linked terror network beheaded its victims. A wheelchair with restraining straps used to move those earmarked for death was also found.
