"but the city of LA has always been a place where 1/2 or more of the place spoke Spanish"
I lived in LA in the late 70's, and half the city did NOT speak Spanish
No offense but you are off base. LA has not always been a majority of spanish speaking illegals but it is now.
Twenty years ago, Dallas was a decent city..now Dallas and many of it's suburbs are crowded with illegals who not only don't speak english but are somehow afforded free education, medical and the free lunch program.
There is nothing wrong with speaking spanish but honestly, these people have no reason to learn because everything here is IN spanish.
When you move to an endangered state (CA,TX,AZ, with others to follow), you may have a better understanding of the problem that faces our country.
I'm not an historian on LA, but I seriously doubt Spanish was a 50% language in the 30's and 40's.
Also, when did I say we should "prevent" the speaking of any language?
IMO, llegal immigration is producing separate cultures and multiculturalism is winning.
Whether its good or bad for the country is the debate which should be taking place.
