MARLBORO MARINE FIRES UP TROOP MORALE
New York Post | 11/14/04 | PATRICK GALLAHUE

Posted on 11/14/2004 11:49:57 AM PST by kattracks

The young Marine dubbed the "Marlboro Man" after his front-page appearance in The Post has become a celebrity poster boy for the U.S. effort in Fallujah and a hero in his hometown.

[snip]

A portrait of the rugged and muddied Miller — snapped after 12 hours of bloody combat with guerrillas — became a powerful symbol for the American forces' gritty effort to retake Fallujah. Marine brass were thrilled with the poignancy of the shot, and Lt. Gen. John Sattler visited Miller's company to applaud them for the feature. News agencies that ran the shot were besieged with calls and e-mails asking for a way to contact the young man.

And back home, in his Appalachian hometown of Jonancy, Ky., his mother reveled at seeing his picture on television just to know her oldest of three sons was OK.

What a great pic. I hope it's nominated for appropriate awards. The awards foundations might be anti-tobacco. Who cares?!

We're just so excited and proud, and want to make this the best visit. Last time they were able to visit was 18 months ago. I'm going to be worried sick while he's over there, but knowing W will continue being their boss is comforting.

My Dad was a Marine artillery gunny sgt. on Peleliu and Vela Lavela, the islet to the north. Said the only fun to be had on that island was swiping cases of beer from the Navy supply ships.

As opposed to someone else we all know who created fake pictures of himself walking through the jungle and then used them for self aggrandizement and to try to bring down our nation.

"I wasn't sure what I could get away with, and I might add, this sight saved me through the election. I have a very liberal family, as are all my friends. I'm the lone " nut case" they try to convert."

Me too! Although some of my friends are republicans. But the rest of my family, with the exception of one daughter, are still die-hard dems. Very frustrating!

Yes we do love military moms! I have 3 daughters, safe and sound here at home thanks to brave men like your sons (and perhaps daughters too). We can never appreciate your sacrifice and theirs enough.

In the top photo he looks so youthful, puckish. He could be on any college campus (except maybe Berkeley) or high school senior class.

In the second photo he looks so cool; a professional warrior: the essence of the term "game face."

I hear this phrase overused these days to even describe yammering blowhards on radio, but these contrasting photos show how these troops, our troops, truly are *great* Americans.
