MARLBORO MARINE FIRES UP TROOP MORALE
New York Post | 11/14/04 | PATRICK GALLAHUE

Posted on 11/14/2004 11:49:57 AM PST by kattracks

The young Marine dubbed the "Marlboro Man" after his front-page appearance in The Post has become a celebrity poster boy for the U.S. effort in Fallujah and a hero in his hometown.

[snip]

A portrait of the rugged and muddied Miller — snapped after 12 hours of bloody combat with guerrillas — became a powerful symbol for the American forces' gritty effort to retake Fallujah. Marine brass were thrilled with the poignancy of the shot, and Lt. Gen. John Sattler visited Miller's company to applaud them for the feature. News agencies that ran the shot were besieged with calls and e-mails asking for a way to contact the young man.

And back home, in his Appalachian hometown of Jonancy, Ky., his mother reveled at seeing his picture on television just to know her oldest of three sons was OK.

Went to that link, got to page 2 of the "mail us" routine and got this:

What a crock!!!

My Mom is like that! My Dad and Step-dad, (Dad's deceased)are/were veterans. My Dad was a Marine, Step-Dad was an Airforce man. I was telling her about the "Marlboro Marine", and she was really touched by the story!

She said if they're was any way she and the Step-Dad could do it; she'd send this young fellow some cartons of cigarettes! Although she used to smoke a lot, and now has cut down a lot, she can still understand another smoker's plight. And furthermore, she regards them, as my Step-dad does, as heroes!

Try different choices from those two drop-down menus on the previous page. You got the same message that I got the first time I did it. Unfortunately I don't remember which choices I chose, but I would think any would be fine.

Why I like his pic:

It's a great way to put a face on our soldiers. My students can partially understand what his life must be like. It's a good visual aid, a good focus for them to maybe feel 1/100,000 of what it feels like to be a soldier in combat....it's not all glory.

What I don't tell my students: Oh, yeah, he's hot!!! And waaaaay too young!

Why I don't want to know his personal details and what he looks like without the camo:

Now, he's an ideal, an icon. He symbolizes what we hope is the best about our soldiers. He looks like a professional, a stone cold killer. He looks like one of those" ...rough men who stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm ...so we can sleep safe in our beds". Finding out his personal details would be, to me anyway, like the time we went to DisneyWorld. It was just after spring break, so there was lots of maintenance going on. As a result, we saw stuff behind the scenes...it took away the magic. That being said, if he was ever in my neighborhood, I'd love to have him over for a family dinner. He's the oldest son, and a Marine, so you gotta know his manners are impeccable!
