This is sweet indeed.
The irony is just too, too rich to absorb completely.
Who will tell the story of these men? Who will write the book? Who will make the movie?
Here are men, slandered by this self-serving politician John Kerry, who lived their lives for the past 30 years with this ember of a stain, seemingly dead to the rest of us, but glowing and living within them.
Most of them, I believe, came to the point where they were prepared to live with the injustice, come to terms with it. After all, it was over. What could John Kerry do to them as a Senator in Massachusetts?
Then lo, and behold, against all odds, Kerry grabs the Democratic nomination for President. The Democrats, who see the 527's as their "golden goose" step up the fundraising. Four powerful and wealthy men (from the "party of the common worker" donate over $100 million between the four of them. They are going to crush the Republican candidate with the sheer weight of their money.
But these men, The Swiftboat Vets, know that they must rise up, and do service for their country once again. Unpaid, unbidden, they band together in an effort to ge their message out to the country.
Their message: This man, John Kerry, must not become the Commander-in-Chief.
They form a 527 to fight back.
They are slandered by the Democrats and the media, just as they were 30 years ago.
They are ignored by the Democrats and the media, just as they were 30 years ago.
But something happened. People listened. And money poured in. $5, $10, $25, $50 at a time, to the point they had $200,000 per day flowing in.
The Democrats very weapon they were going to use to finish off the incumbent, is turned against them, and the reason the Swiftboat Vets 527 worked brilliantly, and the Democratic 527's such as Moveon.org failed is simple.
The Truth cannot be purchased. It cannot be bought. And in this case, it could not be refuted.
The only recourse the Kerry campaign and the Democrats had, was silence. But, instead, they sent the media and the Democratic attack dogs after the Swiftboat Vets. When the public saw these attacks, culminating in the Lawrence O'Donnell tirade, it was over.
In the end, These veterans of the "Brown Water Navy" saved their country in a way they could not by their service in Vietnam.
May the Swiftboat Vets live out their lives with the satisfaction of having made a positive difference in history. And may they finally be at peace with the ghost of Vietnam.
God Bless them all.
Bump for our beloved Swifties!
<><
I agree it could make a good movie.... Maybe showing O'Neill and Kerry's lives side by side.
</sarcasm>
A fine essay here. The Swift Boat Vets performed heroically and at considerable personal cost. I'm still amazed and slightly disturbed that even after the Swift Boat Vets revealed the truth about Kerry, 48% of American voters still voted for Kerry to be our commander in chief. Talk about a dumbed down, brainwashed nation...clearly we have to keep building up the internet and alternative media to counteract the liberal propaganda machine known as the "mainstream media."
Amen. They will go down in history.
Was it really that much money per day??? I think that must be a bit inflated .. don't remember them bringing in over a million a week in any request for funding that I received. What a great group though ... and I gladly paid twice and might give again. Never know when this wacko might surface again. I think a movie should be made on these guys and the 30 years of 'sitting on' their pain. Wonder if Hollywood is up to it.
hugs & kisses to the Swifties!
hugs & kisses to the Swifties!
i'm not sure if they should keep pushing to get kerry's form 180 signed and let america know the truth about his discharge, or wait and see if kerry runs again in '08 and unload all of the dirt then....i expect kerry did get an other than honorable discharge and had it changed later, which is one reason he won't make his records public.
Oliver North.
His "War Stories" on Fox are outstanding.
Amen!
Swift Vets were actively fundraising for almost 5 months, raising a total of $27 million from roughly 140,000 contributors, large and small. It averaged out to about $200K per day.

George Bush submitted the form 180 and opened his full military record to public inspection.
John kerry has persistently refused to submit a form 180 and open his full military record to inspection.
What is he hiding?
This is the question that can't be repeated too often or for too long. It must follow him around persistently till the day he dies.
Agreed! I watch it Sunday nights, when I can. A very, very good show. Ollie would do a great job telling their story.
God Bless you, Swifties! We owe ya BIG TIME!
