Sessions Undecided On Specter Leading Judicial Committee

It is worth noting that this man was Borked by Specter when he was up for a Federal Judgeship.

Hmmm....I wonder if ol' Jeffy likes Arlen...

Associated Press:

Sen. Jeff Sessions says he hasn't decided whether he'll back Arlen Specter to preside over the Judiciary Committee but insists the Pennsylvania Republican shouldn't get the job just because he's next in line.

...

"I've never felt we should feel especially obligated to do that," Sessions said. "You defer to seniority very strongly, but it's also all right for the committee to want to be comfortable that the chairman would be a good leader."

Sessions acknowledged Specter has been a loyal defender of President Bush's judges as a member of the committee but said his comments, made in a post-election conference call with reporters, were regrettable."I wished he hadn't said it," Sessions said.

"But if you read what he said in its entirety, it wasn't a direct threat to the president, although it would have been better left unsaid. It may simply be that there's a difference between being the chairman and making those statements and being a single member of the committee."

...

Alabama's other senator, Republican Richard Shelby, also expressed concern Monday about Specter's comments.

"I remain committed to supporting judicial nominees that share a conservative philosophy and value the sanctity of human life," Shelby said. "I believe it is essential that the President appoint and the Senate confirm judicial nominees who are committed to upholding their role of interpreting and applying the Constitution rather than rewriting it."

If someone says they are undecided about Specter and its secret ballot, I think we all know how they are voting...

I heard Sessions talking about this same topic yesterday on a local talk stations. All he basically said was that his "no" vote against Arlen Speculum would do is keep him out of the chairman's position. Specter would still be on the committee and still have a vote.

I gather the jist was that if 'they' deny him the chairmanship he'll just get pissed and side with libs regardless of appearances.

A kind of "damned if you do, dammed if you don't" situation.

I heard Senator Frist said that the make-up of the committees is going to have a large Republican make-up to reflect the amount of Republican Senators -- that would make sense as they would add another Conservative to the Judiciary Committee and there would be nother Specter and the Dems could do to stop a vote.

Would that not be 'turnabout is fair play'?
