I think our military is handling this just right.
1. Pull the Marine in question out of the battle pending investigation. (After all, this guy was reported to have been injured yesterday, and is wound pretty tight right now. Give him some time off to decompress.)
2. Fully investigate the incident. (Again, this is as much a courtesy to our guy -- if the shooting was justified -- as to the dead combatant -- if it was not. If it was justified, our guy needs to get exonerated. If not, he needs to be punished.)
3. Take appropriate disciplinary action. (Based on what I have heard, this seems to fall within the scope of a legal kill. So, appropriate disciplinary action is publicizing that finding and returning the kid to his unit.)
We need to let the military do its thing in this one. My bet is that they will be fairer than either the press or a civilian court.
