Scoop's legacy survives in a number of places. There are a good many Scoop Jackson Democrats in the legislature and in different state offices. They constitute the sane wing of the Democratic Party.

Given the number of votes the Libertarian candidate for governor of Washington is getting and maybe siphoning from the Republican, this would be a good time for Republicans and Libertarians in Washington state to smoke a peace pipe and find out if there is any common ground on the budget or taxes or something.

I can imagine what Scoop would think of today's Democratic Party.

On a range of issues HMJ would have been outraged, including and especially on those relating to values and opinions on our military. Of course, it is now a different time twenty+ years past his death. But the Demo party has left behind many, many folks that Scoop represented well in Washington State. IMO Rossi now speaks for a vast majority of them.

Actually the State website only lists about 6,100 votes out and 1,000 are from King County. I believe these are the provisional ballots that will be allowed.

It's gonna be a squeaker.

Rossi up by 19; probably won't change until tomorrow morning.

I know Texas and Virginia elect the Gov. and Lt. Gov. seperately as well. W won by a mile in '98 but the LG race was pretty close. George Allen had a rat LG when he was Covernor.

Separate positions, separately elected. We've had Democrats in the Lt. Gov with Republicans in the Gov seat before, though it's generally rare. The Lt. Governor position can be a powerful one, if handled by an extreme rump head.. The laws in the state give the Lt. Gov full powers whenever the Gov is out of the state. A strong Lt. Gov could do some real damage while the Gov was, oh, say at a party convention or at an inauguration.

Now I remember. Pat Brown was a Democrat and Lt. Gov. Mike Kurb was a Republican who would not let Brown travel out of state without worrying about it.
