Led by the nation's number one radio host Rush Limbaugh, America's conservative talkers blasted a series of cartoons on Wednesday that used racist stereotypes to attack Secretary of State nominee Dr. Condoleezza Rice.
"You have to see these [cartoons] to appreciate the pure racism, bigotry, and grotesqueness, as well as the prejudice that's involved," Limbaugh fumed, referring to caricatures of Dr. Rice that have appeared recently in the Washington Post and New York Times.
In one Pat Oliphant cartoon carried by the Post, Rice is drawn as a parrot with thick protruding lips and buck teeth, echoing her boss in subservient tones. In a Jeff Danziger cartoon from last fall, Rice is shown as "Gone With The Wind" star Butterfly McQueen, nursing aluminum tubes instead of a baby as she says in an Amos n' Andy accent: "I Knows All About Aluminum Tubes."
Danizger is syndicated by the New York Times.
A third cartoon from a recent Gary Trudeau "Doonesbury" strip has President Bush admonishing Dr. Rice with the words, "Careful, Brown Sugar."
"If the truth be known here," Limbaugh told his audience, "J. William Fulbright and the Dixiecrats from the Old South who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 have come back to life, and they live and breathe in the Washington Post editorial page as a cartoon. They live and breathe in the panels of Doonesbury. They live and breathe at editorial pages of the New York Times . . . . and wherever else Condoleezza Rice is being besmirched and impugned today."
ABC Radio host Sean Hannity, who has interviewed Dr. Rice on numerous occasions, echoed the same themes during his broadcast, calling the racist depictions of the senior Bush official "disgraceful and disgusting."
In New York, WABC Radio host Mark Levin opened the phones to self described liberals after blasting the anti-Rice cartoons. Most claimed to believe that the drawings were not racist.
The NAACP, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton and most of the rest of the civil rights establishment have yet to comment on the anti-black cartoons.
She certainly has a great suntan!
Time to start the drums and get everybody focused on this - ?
Letters / e-mails to the publishers.
Time to call the 'Rat shows and axe, "Whassup wit dis?"
I can't believe the crap that is coming out after the election.
I actually thought that I could "relax" for a bit.
My first target is the "BigHead Ed" Schultz show.
He actually has a decent show, totally misguided of course, just needs some decent callers to get him right!
LVM
Project 21 sent a letter (with my signature on it) to the NAACP & Jesse Jackson this summer following Ted Rall's BS letter, requesting their support in protesting Rall and his syndicator.
The NAACP sent us back a prefunctory "thanks but no thanks" letter, while I heard nothing but crickets from Gypsy Jackson.
The double-standard is alive and well among the professional civil rights whores of America.
Black conservative ping
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
Chek out the little insert at the bottom right corner of the cartoon shown above. Looks like a reference to "step-n-fetch-it to me. That's racist plain and simple
No surprise there
The Liberals are Pigs!
I think the brown sugar remark IS racist, and contemptible.
Nah....most Liberals are mentally ill.
The caller to one of the radio show was right on, he said Al and JJ are more democrat than black. And they are helping to keep the black men down.
Both Alan Colmes and Bob Blimp Beckel contended that these weren't racist on Hannity and Communist tonight.
Ann Coulter (someone else can supply the pictures, I think she's too skinny) called the Democrats racist, causing Blimp Beckel to have near apoplexy.
It was funny. Ann, the Blimp, and Colmes were all talking at once for rather extended periods. The Blimp invoked the name of Pat Robertson at one point, which caused Ann to correctly note that Blimp Beckel was trying to address everything except the racism of the cartoons.
Good luck calling the pup;ishes of the gayorktimes
There is no comment on the bottom right corner that I can see
Forget any type of reasoning with these leftist/communist. They just need extiction - but keep one around so as to use as a bad example.
Oliphant is the worst kind of moron -- one who thinks he's clever. Thanks for posting his. You wouldn't have Danziger's or Trudeau's? My local rag, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, will wait until Sunday to get the maximum venom spew.
Now thats the hot Condi I love!
i couldn't believe the transparent racist attacks that the kerry campaign made during the election.
you'd think most people by now would be onto the democrat plantation and their racism.
"I don't really consider the cartoons to be racist."
The one where she is portrayed as Prissy (although a rather strange version of Prissy it must be noted) from GWTW is most certainly racist.
The poodle (or is it parrot?) one is not racist, I don't think, at all. The "Brown Sugar" one is borderline. To me that is not racist, but I could see how a person would see it differently.
But the prissy one, which is quite old at this point, is the most vile and digustingly racist political cartoon I have ever seen. Basically in that the cartoonist is calling her a stupid nigger and it cannot be denied.
Now, nothing aginst you personally Jim, but I think a lot of men are not understanding this cartoon, because they are not getting the Gone with the Wind reference, distorted though it is, no doubt the distortion is due to the (male) cartoonist's own lack of familiarity with GWTW. He's heard "the line" but he don't know the character at all.
take if from me kiddo, I grew up in NYC, this is one racist bit of tripe. Reverse the roles and put Maxine Waters in the picture and tell me it's not clear.
Al and JJ will consider Condi a "Auntie Tomasina" or "house slave" and that will be that.
The only reason the left didn't attack Colin Powell is they thought they had a guy on the inside... which they did.
I'll honor your perspective. But the Oliphant cartoon seems to me only to be a reasonable characature, though pushing a dead-wrong premise.
Like a caller to Rush noted today, the "Revs" have sold out to the Democrat party. They're more Democrat than black.
Woe betides the African-American who dares to leave the Democrat Plantation.
