In my traveling days around the USA in the 70's and 80's, I found more race hatred in the North than in the South - especially in Boston. Such is the educational value of travel and listening to what the natives are saying.

The ad was a promotion of THAT KIND of culture. It added to the other promotions of a culture in which a condom and a warm feeling makes anything OK.
So, it goes beyond that we have a TV controller and can change the channel.
