Please tell me this is a fierro joke.
I'm pretty sure it's not a joke. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (east bay). The only "reasonably" priced homes are in bad neighbors in Richmond and the like.
I can attest that fierro is telling no joke.
But yes, the ridiculously overinflated property values in California are a joke. The only problem is, nobody's laughing.
It's not a joke :-(
For those folks who are lucky enough to own a home, just think....you'll never have to suffer from "empty nest syndrome". Your kids will always be there.
There's a 3BD, 2BA, 1,400 square foot condo (no private garage) for sale down the street from my apartment building.
$859,000.
I'm afraid it isn't a joke.
I'm series.
And stop calling me Shirley.

No, that's quite real.
Nope not a joke.
I'm sad to say it's not a joke. Crap houses like that routinely sell for more than $460,000 even inland. To get a decent sized house in a decent neighborhood for less than half a million is almost impossible. I refuse to pay for or live in one of those crackerboxes. For less money per month, I can rent a really nice house on a nice piece of land. So what if I'm not building equity? What good is ownership if you hate the place you own?
I live in Ca. It is no joke.
No joke. In So. Calif., the tract homes built right after WWII are offered in the high 400K's (if you're lucky) and 500K's and even 600K's (if improved) all over the place. They sold for probably 10K to 12K new, around 20K in the 60's.
My son keeps thinking he can't afford to leave So. Calif. because he makes good money, but I keep telling him he'd be able to get into a house elsewhere for much less and may do better overall even with a cut in pay.
The worst thing is, the quality of life here is nothing like it was when I was growing up, it's like another planet. The only good thing is that the "old" homeowners will take some bucks with them as they relocate, but it seems like all you do is stay ahead of the curve a bit as the gangs and problems spread.
