They better change the Senate rules on filibusters.

Republican leaders aren't REALLY interested in stopping judicial activism - especially after the last election. They believe that judicial misconduct brings rep. voters to the polls in record numbers.
I'm sure that over the last week, in their smoke filled rooms, Frist, McCain, and Rove decided that more judicial filibustering is a good thing for republican politicians, if not their constituents.

I suspect they have Specter on a short leash.
I would have vastly preferred Kyl...
If The Spectre screws up, they can always remove him.

If he challenges even a single nominee they will have sealed the fate of the GOP in 2006.

Many will feel stupid for worrying about Specter once Bush gets his first couple of Justices on the Supreme Court. Then all will be forgiven and we can move on to bringing down Hillary. We have to keep our eyes on the prize. The media would love for us to fight amongst ourselves for the next 4 years. Sometimes you have to lose a battle to win a war.

"Republican leaders aren't REALLY interested in stopping judicial activism - especially after the last election. They believe that judicial misconduct brings rep. voters to the polls in record numbers."
I doubt the truth of that statement. The Republicans probably got the assurances that they need from Specter and do not want to upset tradition. I don't think this is some attempt to keep judicial activism alive to get more voters to the polls. If Specter causes a problem, it will come back to haunt the senators who voted for him, and that is probably why they got some very strong assurances from him.
I am more worried about filibusters.
