This is long but worth noting when trying to understand who is the reporter that didn't care about our Marines enough to cause trouble for them.

My analysis: he's got a huge ego, never went through embed program at Pentagon, masters from Northwestern (elite J-school), cynical towards all authority, feeling powerful because he "escaped" captivity once, he's using our troops to advance his career, continues weblogging and personal promotion even when contracted out to CNN or NBC, he's mildly hostile to the commanders in the field, yet towards the end you'll see he struggles with moral equivalency. I believe he knows Americans are right, yet he's torn between that and the journalistic group-think he was taught in school.

"So in some ways, embedded in this unit, I begin to feel I've betrayed the people that depend on me to be skeptical." NOTICE HOW HE ISN'T CONCERNED ABOUT BETRAYING THOSE HE DEPENDS UPON TO KEEP HIM ALIVE, BUT THE LIBERALS BACK HOME TO WHOM HE'S PLEDGED HIS ALLEGIANCE....

By the way, I'm trying to turn this around the way libs do, and make it a bit about the reporter vs. the Marine. Why does NO ONE question the reporter's motives, credentials, etc?

Betrayal So in some ways, embedded in this unit, I begin to feel I've betrayed the people that depend on me to be skeptical; to question the dominant powers and institutions of my nation and the actions it undertakes in the name of its citizens. I am not a military or American cheerleader, not a mouthpiece signed on to some institutional agenda whether I believe in it or not. I am here to ask the hard questions of the people who make the hardest decisions; ones that result in people dying or people being killed. I must remember as one journalist advised, "write in your notepad every day 'I am not one of them.'"

Well, I think that sums it up...

He asks me where I'm from and I say Ireland, another partial lie—since I carry an Irish as well U.S. passport.

Good. Let's revoke this America-hating b**ches U.S. Passport, and he can go back to Ireland.

"...It is uncalloused, slender, did it, I question in my mind, make the deadly pull?..."

Not only does he think he is a reporter, but now he thinks he is a Professional Military analyst. Why? does every person who pulls a trigger have callous fingers??? Is this worth mentioning???? By THE WAY, is there such a word as uncalloused? Reporter, yeah, ok!

He should just keep to the facts and not make them up as he goes!

All I need to know about this guy is that because of his report more of our guys will be killed or wounded, and our position in Iraq is made worse. And he knew this.

Well... I wouldn't be the one to suggest any illegal action or anything, of course, but with the talent in this group - why is this putz's web site sill operational?

'I am not one of them.'"

He does not know who he is. How sad for him. This guy is VERY confused. He has got himself into an 'emotional free ride' and beats the rest of us over the head with his BS justification for himself and his 'profession' while the we have HAD to come to terms with the war and are NOT permitted the luxury to equivocate about 'these people' and the situation.

My first reaction was: the guy needs to have an accident. I'm a Marine widow (not combat-related) and know first hand the incredible things these men do... I decided days ago that I could actually get violent with these talking heads who question our guys. Good thing they aren't in my face.

But as a former journalist for a Navy paper also, I was curious about this guy. I understand the attitude, but was a little surprised he seems so young (from photo on website). I was hoping some of the post-Vietnam attitude towards the military would be changed in my generation.

I still believe embeds are good. This guy just has an ego that can't be stopped. I think his four hour captivity gave him some kind of "god" complex.

He's just the kind of guy who'll end up beheaded because he gets too cocky...so nature will take its course.

I don't think so. I think it was the Fedayeen who did that to him, and so now he's spending his time trying to figure out what it was he did to them, that would make them do that... etc... typical left-wing touchy-feely crap.

"We are eventually released, but have lost one of our trucks, most of our gear and all of our money; thousands in U.S. dollars that were supposed to help buy us out of binds like this one. Instead it is words, Tofiq's words that have set us free. "

How romantic. They took almost ALL your stuff, but it was the words that bought your freedom. Puh-lease.

F###K the be-ach! Why doesn't he head north where the Kurds live. They can tell him about helicopters and planes used by Saddam to kill them with chemical weapons. They can tell him about the fear and horror they felt for 12 long years while the UN sat on it's hands while the Kurds faced humiliation and death at the hand's of Saddam. Better yet, let him join the terrorists as other reporters have done to cover the story from their point of view. He's an enemy of this country as surely as the 19 yr. old with the oh so soft hands who took down an American helicopter killing 6. This jackass doesn't have calloused hands either. Here's hoping the P###K gets into a firefight, and has to pick up a weapon to save his own life. After he changes his shorts he may feel differently about the young and gentle 19 yr. old boys who also happen to be cold blooded killers!

Many of us are feeling the same sense of outrage.

Maybe we should be asking this question: WHAT kind of education are we providing that creates this kind of moral confusion among our best and brightest (ha) grads?

I loved his ambiguous description of the Marine Colonel. He's never SEEN anyone so straightforward and confident -- the reporter simply cannot relate (though somewhere down deep his conscience is telling him something).

Hey Kevin, I bet the murderers in these be-headings didn't have calloused hands either. The soldiers were working for a democratic and free Iraq, but let's dig deeper into the feelings and rational of the murderers. Tyranny is a hard thing to let go of when you are the oppressor Kevin.

Site: Zarqawi Group Beheads Two Iraqi Soldiers
Fri Nov 19, 2004 05:49 AM ET

DUBAI (Reuters) - The group led by al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said it beheaded two Iraqi soldiers in broad daylight in Mosul, a statement found on an Islamist Web site on Friday said.
"They were both slaughtered in Mosul in front of a large group of people," the statement by Al Qaeda Organization of Holy War in Iraq said. The claim, dated Nov. 18, could not be immediately verified.

"Just when the enemies of God thought they would crush us with their tyrannical military campaign in Falluja...the al Qaeda organization in Iraq slaughtered two 'National Guards' on Thursday afternoon," the statement said, adding the men killed were at the rank of major and lieutenant.

U.S. and Iraqi troops this month launched a campaign to crush insurgents, including Zarqawi's group, in the rebel town of Falluja west of Baghdad.

The U.S. military says it has taken control of the city, but the offensive has fueled violence across Iraq's Sunni Muslim heartland, especially in Mosul in the north.

Zarqawi's group has claimed responsibility for hostage beheadings and some of Iraq's bloodiest suicide attacks.

Use a reporter as a shield to protect your squad. Maneuver to keep the reporter always between your troops and the T's....Works...

Well, Sites can certainly write well, but it seems to me that he's trying to excuse his traitorous actions of a few days ago. Too bad, he could have been better than a Benedict Arnold.
