The South Rises With The Tide
Washington Post ^ | 11/21/04 | George F. Will

Don Cole, aka the Heart Guy, was ailing and wore a beeper. He was a candidate for a heart transplant and was not supposed to ever be more than a two-hour drive from his Nashville hospital, in case it received a heart that could be transplanted. He said that, if the hospital learned that he left the two-hour radius, he would be removed from the list of recipients. So why, weekend after weekend, was he 3 1/2 hours from Nashville, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.? "If I can't go to Alabama football games, what's the point in living?"

Then there is the couple whose huge RV resembles the fuselage of a Boeing 737. What sacrifices have they made for their devotion to Alabama football? "Let's see," muses the husband. "We missed our daughter's wedding. We told her, just don't get married on a game day and we'll be there, hundred percent, and she went off and picked the third Saturday in October, which everybody knows is when Alabama plays Tennessee, so we told her, hey, we got a ballgame to go to. We made the reception -- went there as soon as the game was over."

All anybody has been talking about down here this week is South Carolina-Clemson, and will Lou Holtz come back, and is USC getting Steve Spurrier (ugh!) to coach next year, which apparently they are.

USC is one of the most consistently mediocre college football programs in the country--not always bad, never good, just mediocre. They were competitive for a while in the ACC but decided the ACC wasn't good enough, jumped to the SEC, and have been looking up at most everybody but Vanderbilt ever since, most years. But they can pack 80,000+ fans into Williams-Bryce Stadium every home game and turn thousands more away at the gate despite the fact they never go to major bowls, and are rarely top-25 ranked. And when they have a bad season, there's always next year.

I went to a I-AA school (James Madison) that got 10,000 people to a home game...on Homecoming. I never have gotten, and never will get, SEC football. Oh well...go Cocks, send Lou out on a winning note.

Yes, let's hear it for Bama: They have only 3 losing seasons in the last 10 years...they have been able to win 3 bowl games in the last 10 years..they have been able to beat Auburn 4 times in the last 10 years....since Bryant died, Auburn leads the series 12-10...

some tradition, huhhh???

The Tide bring more class and tradition just walking onto the field than the Tigers could muster given a year of all twelve of their mascots cheering.

And bow your head when you speak of Coach Bryant. RIP, Bear.

You have got to be kidding me. Alabama has more tradition in its football program then you would ever begin to know. The last 10 years are a result of a bunch of white haired morons called the NCAA and a couple of low class coaches who couldn't handle the fact that Alabama out classed them in the prior 50 years. Wake up and Roll Tide!!!
